Lehighton fire displaces 6

Six people were displaced after a fire broke out early this morning at a business in Lehighton with apartments above it.

Borough fire Chief Pat Mriss said the fire broke out at 1 a.m. at 207 N. First St., the site of Crazy for Closeouts.

Upon arrival, Mriss said firefighters encountered smoke conditions on the second floor, and found fire in an exterior wall on the first, second and third floors.

He said there were six people inside the apartments above the business, all of whom were displaced.

Mriss said there were no injuries.

He said it took firefighters about a half-hour to knock down the fire.

“It’s uninhabitable,” Mriss said. “The utilities have been cut to the property; they can’t stay there.”

Mriss said the cause of the fire is unknown, but that it’s under investigation by a state police fire marshal.

Also assisting at the scene were the Franklin Township Fire Department, Mahoning Valley Fire Department, Jim Thorpe Fire Department, Lehighton Ambulance, Mahoning Valley Ambulance, and Lehighton Fire Police.
