Man faces assault charges in Kidder

Kidder Township police have arrested a New Jersey man on felony, misdemeanor and summary charges after an incident just before midnight on Jan. 4 at the Comfort Inn, Route 940, White Haven.

Edwin Torres, 33, of Nutley, is charged with strangulation, simple assault, unlawful restraint and harassment.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Officer Austin J. Bott Jr., he was dispatched to Room 321 of the Comfort Inn, for a report of a domestic disturbance and saw a woman was seated on the floor in the doorway and being treated by EMS personnel for a deep laceration of the top of her head and forehead.

Torres told the officer the woman was injured in the area of the lobby of the inn, saying she fell and struck her head on the tile floor.

Bott said he reviewed the inn’s video of the incident the next day, which showed Torres and the woman having a brief conversation in that area at 11:50 p.m., and he grabbed the woman’s shawl, pulling her off balance.

Police said as she lost balance, she struck her head on the door and door handle before falling to her knees, suffering both the head injury and injury to her left leg.

Police said the video shows Torres picking up the woman and the two walking to Room 321.

When she was interviewed by Bott the next day, the victim told him when she got back to the room, she attempted to get help, but Torres grabbed her by the arm and pulled the phone from her, knocking her off the bed onto the floor, injuring her forearm. She said Torres kneeled on her chest and placed a wet towel over her nose and mouth, rendering her unable to breathe.

She said she was able to get off the floor and open the door, but Torres slammed it on her left leg, injuring her shin. He pulled her back into the room, closing the door.

A short time later, she said, she remembered other people in the room helping her with her injuries.
