Meeting canceled

The meeting of the Eldred Township Board of Supervisors scheduled for tonight has been canceled. The Board will meet in a special meeting at 10 a.m. Dec. 27.

PVMS PTO meeting

The Pleasant Valley Middle School PTO is slated to meet at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Board of Education

The Pleasant Valley School District board of Education is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday.

WELL meeting

The West End Little League public meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at The Chestnuthill Township Park in Route 715, Brodheadsville.

Registration closing

West End Soccer League (wesl.us) indoor soccer registration is now open online. It will close Friday.

Seniors meetings

The Chestnuthill Seniors will meet Friday, but not next Wednesday due to it being Christmas.

The activity is slated to be Tai-chi with Dolores. The light menu is listed as spinach salad, chickpea salad, sliced peaches/juice and whole grain bread, two slices.

The regular menu is 10-grain pollock, green beans, stewed tomatoes and an orange.

Early dismissal

Pleasant Valley schools will have early dismissal on Friday, and students will be on winter recess until Jan. 2.

Caring visiting

The Western Pocono Women’s Club is restarting a program to visit residents at the Getz Personal Care Home in Jonas.

Members anticipate going Thursday to have snacks, fun and games with the seniors in the afternoon.

The club does not meet in January and February due to weather possibilities.

Members have, however, accomplished some good things in the past several months.

The Club, with help from the Girl Scouts, the members have made and signed 1,675 Christmas cards to bring cheer to the veterans during the holidays.

Another project, with help from some men, saw the club doing its final cleanup of the garden at the group’s garden in front of the Chestnuthill Diner for the winter.

Club members have learned that after almost 18 years of adopting this area, they have to turn it back over to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation due to the danger of extremely high volume of traffic.

However, the club is still going to beautify the West End at two other locations including the West End Fair on Fairgrounds Road and the Western Pocono Memorial Park on Molasses Valley Road.

And still going on, this Thursday, is the group’s quilting session.

In November, the 11 members who were present at that several hours long quilting session made 12 lap quilts for clients of Meals on Wheels and for Children and Youth Services in Monroe County.

Holiday break

The Community Center and Thrift Store of Eldred Township will be closed Friday until Jan. 8 to give volunteers time to spend with their families.

Eldred Township will welcome the new supervisor, Donna Mikol, at the organizational meeting on Jan. 6.

Appointments will be made for the Planning Commission, Community Center Board, and other positions at that time. Anyone interested in serving is asked to submit a letter of interest to the township before Dec. 30.

Cleanup day

American Legion Post 927 is having its monthly cleanup day Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. No tools are needed, they will be supplied. However, helping hands are needed. Just show up is the request.

The SAL party, for folks who are signed up, follows at 3 p.m.

Pantry distribution

The Eldred Township Community Center food pantry distribution will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Busy Saturday

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, will have a busy Saturday afternoon. At noon there will be a potluck lunch. Then at 12:30 p.m. the church family will celebrate the Hanging of the Greens. Everyone is welcome.

Sunday’s events include a Praise service at 8:15 a.m., Confirmation class at 9 a.m. and another Praise service at 10:30 a.m.

Christmas cantata

The Cantata entitled Born to Save will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew’s UCC in Kunkletown, with a repeat performance at 4 p.m. Sunday at Effort UMC.

Sunday supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will host a Sunday supper from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The West End Mission meal will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 26.

Offices closing

Chestnuthill Township office will close at noon Tuesday for the holiday and reopen Dec. 26.

Eldred Township will be closed both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Polk Township will be closed on Wednesday. The solid waste center will be open on Dec. 26 for garbage and recycling for permit holders. The township has an emergency checklist available to help residents be prepared for difficulties. That is available in the office during regular office hours.

WEHA party

The West End Home Association is having its Christmas Eve party, for members and guests who have signed up at the post, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Christmas services

• Effort UMC will have three Christmas Eve services. The first service at 6 p.m. is a Family Service of Celebration, the children provide a re-enactment of the Christmas Story. The second service at 8 p.m. is a service with the church choir, primarily music. The last service, at 11 p.m., is a service of lessons and carols. Scripture lessons are read with hymns being sung. All the services are candlelight services.

• McMichaels UMC will have services at 3 and 7 p.m. Christmas Eve.

• Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, will have Mass at 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and midnight Christmas Eve. There will also be a Christmas Mass at 11 a.m. on Christmas Day.

• Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, Is having a service at 7 p.m. Christmas Day

• Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, will have services with carols, Holy Communion and candle lighting at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

• Salem UCC, Gilbert, will hold its Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m.

• St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, will have an early Christmas Eve service with Communion at 3 p.m.; a Country Christmas Eve service with Communion at 7 p.m. and a traditional Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols service with Communion at 10 p.m.

• St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, will have a family oriented service, with special music, at 7 p.m. The Rev. Edward Bean will present his message: Bought at Great Price.

• Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, will have a candlelight worship service with Holy Communion at 3:30 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. On Christmas Day the church is hosting a free community dinner from 1 to 3 p.m.

Christmas dinner

Cherry’s Family Restaurant in Kresgeville is hosting a free Christmas dinner from 1 to 4 p.m. on Christmas Day for anyone in need, due to being homeless, having no family or just being alone.

Owner Lobby Tsirigotis says he is doing it for outreach and love. He adds that the restaurant is not open for any business this day nor are any of the employees required to work or even help out. This is being done entirely as volunteer and nonprofit work for the community. It will include his fiancee and her sister and husband.

CWU celebrates

Church Women United of Monroe County, est. 1959, held a Christmas luncheon hosted by Our Lady Queen of Peace in Gilbert earlier in December.

Father Mike Quinnan and CWU President Marlene Maula welcomed everyone.

The Margaret Wyckoff Wells award was given to Janet Truncali of Stroudsburg for her outstanding service to CWU, her church and the community, including Pocono Area Transitional Housing, VNA Hospice and various areas in her church.

Ann Super was the recipient of the CWU Valiant Woman award for her outstanding accomplishments ranging from.

In addition, Nora Cilurso collected 217 filled Christmas stockings from various churches to be given to area organizations.

Christian Porter, a singer/songwriter who performs locally, and in New York City, Philadelphia, New Jersey and Nashville, was the featured entertainer.

Winter repairs

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is now accepting applications for winter home repairs for families that qualify.

That qualifying could include repairs or even new appliances.
