Local students show support for injured player

Injured football player Jaden Leiby continues to inspire generosity from local high school students.

Tamaqua Area High School will honor North Schuylkill High School senior with tributes on their football helmets and the field when they host Notre Dame-Green Pond Friday night. The school painted the number 6 in each end zone, and painted each 6-yard-line red. The players will wear Number 6 stickers on their helmets.

The school took over 200 orders for the T-shirts and 125 for wrist bands produced by the North Schuylkill School District as of Thursday afternoon. They’ve also accepted over $600 in donations which will go to the Leiby family.

At Friday’s game, the concession stands will be accepting donations for Leiby’s family. The booster club stands will be contributing a portion of their profits to Leiby’s family and have all made financial contributions since Leiby’s injury.

“It is amazing the support that has been given from everyone. It proves what great people that live in our area,” athletic director Mike Hromyak said in an email.

Marian Catholic High School was also taking orders for T-shirts on Thursday. The student council coordinated the efforts. The school is holding a dress down day on Nov. 11 with proceeds benefiting Leiby’s family.

Dean of Student Affairs Pete Sanfilippo is from the North Schuylkill area and said there are many students from there as well. On top of that, the two schools often compete on the field.

“A lot of these students know each other, compete with each other on the athletic field. It’s great to see the whole community come together and support a great cause, and help Jaden out,” he said.
