Lehighton authors Rebecca Finsel and her son, Joel Finsel, will appear on the weekly television program “PA Books” on Sunday. The Finsels are co-authors of the book “Franz Kline in Coal Country.”

“PA Books” is a weekly program on PCN that features an hourlong conversation with authors of newly published books on topics unique to Pennsylvania.

“Franz Kline in Coal Country” is the first biography to examine Kline’s formative years in Lehighton, Philadelphia, Boston and London, before he became a founding member of the New York School, the ragtag group of abstract expressionist painters who stole the art world away from Paris after WWII. This book, according to Kline’s sister, Dr. Louise Kline-Kelly, sets the record straight in more than one place in her brother’s life.

Compiled over three decades, “Franz Kline in Coal Country” also contains more than 100 of his earliest drawings, cartoons, letters, photos, paintings and linoleum-block prints. Most of these little-known works, rescued from the attics and scrapbooks of friends, appear here for the first time.

With more than 20 years on the air, “PA Books” continues to produce an extensive video collection of interviews with the experts on Pennsylvania’s history and culture. “PA Books” has preserved key moments of Pennsylvania by focusing on significant events and examining the lives of Pennsylvania’s most famous citizens such as Franz Kline.

“PA Books” airs Sunday nights at 7 p.m. and daily at 8 a.m. With the PCN Select streaming service, viewers can stream new and on demand episodes of PA Books at any time.

Rebecca Finsel has more than two decades of journalistic experience in writing and photography, and is a former reporter for the Times News. She began researching Kline in 1986, and she continues to lecture on Kline. She is also the author of “Carbon County: A Postcard History.”

Joel Finsel has written for The Oxford American, Palaver, SALT and many other publications. Joel lives in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he conducts research for special projects at the University of North Carolina. He is currently working on a book about the medicinal history of cocktails.
