Art with a View coming to Blue Mountain
A wide variety of local artists will have a chance to show off their stellar work next month.
The Carbon County Community Foundation will host its second charity art exhibit, sale and auction at Blue Mountain from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Oct. 10.
“We had such a good turnout last year. We had about 150 people there,” said Amber Breiner, executive director of the Carbon County Community Foundation. “We’re hoping to have at least that many people out again. We had positive feedback from all of the guests. The reoccurring compliment that we got from the guests was that it was classy. It’s a big need in Carbon County to have 21st century event venues. If you want to have a conference or an upscale event, our options are pretty limited. People ought to know and support Blue Mountain; they’re doing great things in terms of providing that quality venue.”
The event will feature top artists who live and work in the Carbon County region, which include Desha, Doug Didyoung, Mia Fantasia, Joan Lech, Randy Rabenold, Earlene Russel, Sheri Ryan, Mary Anne Shafer, Lynn Shupp, Denege Smith, Victor Stabin and Jeanne Stemler. Some of these artists have years of experience, while others are displaying their creations for the first time in public.
Smith, a single mother of three, has been in the Jim Thorpe area for about 17 years. A chef by trade, she’ll have her work shown in public for the first time at Blue Mountain.
“I’m fairly new to painting,” Smith said. “I actually just discovered that I have this ability over the last couple of years. I’ve always kind of been an artist; I just didn’t really know I could paint. I’m really excited. I can’t say that I’m nervous, but I’m a performer also, so I’m used to being on stage.”
Vince DeGiosio, Josh Finsel, Shawn McCarty, Christie McGorry and Kyle O’Brien will be the performing musicians at the event. There will also be a tribute to former Jim Thorpe art teacher Randy Rabenold. Bill Lance will be the emcee for the auction toward the end of the night.
“We’re building a perpetual fund to support the arts in our community,” Breiner said. “This is important, because when you put the arts against other basic needs, they often lose out. The efforts of the community foundation, the volunteers and the donors today are going to grow and pay off in the future. It’s great, even if we choose to not do this event in future years, it’s planted a seed that will continue to grow and bear fruit in the community for future years to come.”
