Carbon County Environmental Education Center has a lot going on in the coming months.
Sign up for any of these events. Preregistration is easy: Just call 570-645-8597, and leave a message if you get the machine. Leave your name and phone number, and how many people you’re registering for an event.
Here are a few of the upcoming events.
• Oct. 12: Adult Art Class: Leaves of Fall, 10 a.m. to noon. Artist Jean Perry leads the class and encourages participants to bring some of their own colored leaves. There is a fee.
• Oct. 12: Phenology Watch, 10 a.m. Phenology is the study of “what happens and when” for plants and animals in a natural landscape. Participants will learn to make their own phenology calendar using the colors of the seasons and surroundings. All ages are welcome to this free program, though small children may not enjoy the morning’s “sit and observe” focus.
• Oct. 19: Fall Foliage Hike, 10 a.m. Forestry Consultant Jeff Wartluft leads this group into the flaming foliage of fall. If nature cooperates, this will be an ideal weekend to check out the display of deciduous leaves. Though the hike is along easy walking trails, sturdy shoes are recommended. All ages are welcome to this free program. Each participant takes home a free tree identification guide.
• Oct. 20: Star Party, 7 p.m. Rain/cloud cover date: Oct. 21. It’s peak time for the Orionid meteor shower, and with only a sliver of moon to interfere with our view, the night looks promising! Mercury may also be visible shortly after sunset, and CCEEC will supply binoculars and a telescope for better viewing. The free program includes light refreshments and is led by Penn State star-gazing enthusiast Dr. Carl Frankel.
