Local Roundup: Results from Aug. 31
The Lehighton field hockey team continued its strong start to the season with a convincing win over Pleasant Valley on Saturday.
Elsewhere, the Tamaqua, Jim Thorpe and Northern Lehigh girls soccer teams posted victories. The Raiders’ boys soccer team also picked up a win.
FIELD HOCKEY
Pleasant Vy.-Lehighton
Karissa Hough’s hat trick helped Lehighton register a 5-0 victory over Pleasant Valley.
Hough also added an assist in the win.
Madison Brown finished with a goal and an assist for the winners, while Aleah Nothstein tallied a goal. The Indians (2-0) also received an assist from Ali Miller.
The Tribe finished with a 25-2 advantage in shots and held a 17-0 margin in corners.
No. Lehigh-Lehighton
Two second-half goals helped Lehighton pull away for a 3-1 non-league win over Northern Lehigh in Friday’s season opener.
Allison Miller’s second goal of the game gave the Indians a 2-1 advantage after the intermission. Miller — who opened the scoring in the first half — and Madison Becksted, assisted on Madison Brown’s goal to put the Tribe ahead 3-1.
Lehighton held an 11-2 edge in shots on goal, and a 14-4 advantage in corners.
Madison Cunfer scored on an assist from Hailey Evans in the first half for the Bulldogs.
The Indians won the JV contest, 4-0.
GIRLS SOCCER
Tamaqua-
Wyoming Seminary
Four goals from Emma Kuczynski upped her career to 50 as Tamaqua rolled to an 8-0 non-league win over Wyoming Seminary.
Kuczynski — who is now in fourth place among goal scorers in Blue Raider history — tallied three of her goals in the first half as Tamaqua jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
The winners also received two goals and two assists from Katie Rudy, while Sophia Boyle added a goal and a couple of helpers. Maura Walker also chipped in with a goal.
The Raiders’ Baylee Reinhardt and Zoe Seltzer combined for nine saves.
Palmerton-No. Lehigh
Shaina Mazzocca of Northern Lehigh recorded a hat trick, accounting for all of her team’s goals, to help the Bulldogs post a 3-2 victory over Palmerton.
The winners finished with an 18-16 advantage in shots, with goalie Erica Detweiler making eight saves.
The Blue Bombers received a pair of goals from Carissa Fallon, while goalie Madison Balliet made seven stops.
Sch. Haven-Jim Thorpe
Lydia Wallace and Lauren LeKites helped Jim Thorpe roll to an 8-0 non-league win in its season opener against Schuylkill Haven.
Wallace had a hat trick for the Olympians in the first half, and LeKites scored three times after the intermission. LeKites also recorded an assist.
Heidi Washel and Nicole Carroll added second- half goals for Jim Thorpe, while Kyle Dulski tallied an assist.
The Olympians held a 26-10 edge in shots on goal, and a 7-2 advantage in corners. Kate Bos made 10 saves for Thorpe.
Lehighton-Pen Argyl
Pen Argyl scored four first-half goals en route to a 4-1 non-league victory over Lehighton.
The Green Knights’ Abigail Wallbillich scored a pair of goals, as her team outshot the Indians 15-7.
Lehighton’s only score came in the second half when Kelsey Gaston tallied off a feed from Katie Aaron.
Pleasant Valley-Bangor
Pleasant Valley peppered host Bangor with plenty of shots, but couldn’t find the net as the two teams played to a 0-0 draw.
The Slaters’ Alexis Pope made 34 saves to earn a shutout. The Bears’ Samantha Merklin stopped nine shots in a contest that went 100 minutes.
BOYS SOCCER
Tamaqua-Minersville
Michael Shlanta finished with a hat trick to help Tamaqua pull away from Minersville for a 7-1 non-league win.
Tied 1-1 in the first half, Shlanta scored two goals to give the Blue Raiders a 3-1 lead. Shlanta then tallied to open the second half.
The winners also received goals from Tyler Steigerwalt, Ian Davis, Luca Cammarota and Mateo Gomez. Wyatt Zeigler also added an assist.
Tamaqua — which finished with a 19-6 advantage in shots — received five saves from goalie Zachary Frie.
In the JV contest, the Raiders won a 6-4 decision.
Jim Thorpe-Pen Argyl
Jim Thorpe and Pen Argyl battled to a 1-1 non-league tie.
The Green Knights opened the scoring in the second half on a goal by Lucas Maggipinto, but Thor Huth came up with the equalizer for the Olympians. Jack Morris assisted on Huth’s tally.
Thorpe received seven saves from goalie Jacob Geiser, while Graham Rose had 16 stops for Pen Argyl.
Lehighton-Catasauqua
Damian DiPaolo scored the only goals of the game to lead Catasauqua to a 2-0 non-league win over Lehighton.
DiPaolo broke a scoreless tie when he found the back of the cage with 12:54 left in regulation. He added an insurance tally with 3:48 left to play.
Goalie Randy Bongiorno made 16 saves for the Indians (0-1).
Pleasant Vy.-PM West
Chris Tambasco’s goal with 1:47 left in regulation gave Pocono Mountain West a 2-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley on Friday.
The goal was Tambasco’s second of the game, as he previously scored in the opening half to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Bears — who actually had a 22-9 advantage in shots and a 6-4 margin in corner kicks — received a first-half tally from Canyon Marks.
CROSS COUNTRY
Tamaqua, Lehighton, Marian and Palmerton participated in the Northampton Invitational cross country meet, with the Lady Raiders placing third in the A/AA team standings.
Individually, Kelsey Gaston of Lehighton had the best female finish, as the junior placed seventh overall with a time of 20:09 in the A/AA race. Tamaqua’s Grace Stegemerten was close behind in ninth (20:13).
The Raiders, who had 129 points, also got strong performances from Frances Kabana in 11th (20:24), while Palmerton’s Natalie Moser placed 14th (20:44).
Lehighton placed seventh in the team standings with 169 points. Marian was ninth (214).
Tamaqua’s Brandon Fogarty ran to a fifth-place finish in 17:03 in the A/AA boys’ race. Palmerton’s eighth-place finish (204) was the best among area teams.
VOLLEYBALL
Lehighton, Tamaqua at Cardinal Clash
Lehighton tied for third at Pine Grove’s Cardinal Clash.
The Indians went 3-5 in pool play, and defeated Northern Lebanon 25-20 in the quarterfinals. The Tribe fell to eventual champion Nativity 25-15, 26-24 in the semis.
Alyssa Frey had 35 assists, 11 kills, 17 aces and 10 digs for Lehighton. Sophia Salerno added 18 kills, six aces and 13 digs.
Tamaqua went 1-8 in its pool. The Raiders fell 25-18 to Schuylkill Haven in the first round.
Nativity topped Mahanoy Area 22-25, 25-14, 15-11 in the final.
Marian at Freedom Tournament
Marian posted a combined 5-7 mark at Freedom’s First Kill Tournament over the weekend.
The Fillies were 1-5 against Southern Lehigh, Upper Merion and Nazareth in the morning sets. Marian went 4-2 against Archbishop Ryan and Delmar Christian (Delaware) in the afternoon.
Alivia Karchner had 29 kills for the Fillies. Ashlyn Klitsch totaled 59 assists, and Macie Mazalusky finished with 11 aces and 37 digs.
MMI Prep-Weatherly
MMI Prep swept Weatherly 25-14, 25-18, 25-23 in non-league action.
MMI also won the JV match 2-0.
