Concerns raised over sewer plant project delays

Nesquehoning council members aired their frustrations over delays in the completion of a $500,000 project at the borough’s sewer plant.

On Wednesday, Councilwoman Mary Fox, chairwoman of the sewer committee, updated the board on the renovation of Unit 2 at the sewer plant and where the completion of the project stood.

The approximate $500,000 project began last year and was delayed until April after the borough had problems with the contractor Eastern Environmental and work that was completed.

Council has repeatedly said that there are many issues with the work, including the painting of the unit last July, which was already peeling because it wasn’t sealed to manufacturer specifications.

Last month, council announced that the repainting that was redone by the subcontractor in May compromised the painting that had already been completed because the product was not installed based on the company’s instructions.

Fox said that the borough is already into liquidated damages up to $60,000.

The project, which included an overhaul of the sewer treatment unit, was supposed to be completed following the winter delay by June 29.

Solicitor Robert Yurchak on Wednesday suggested the borough send Eastern Environmental a letter giving them a hard deadline for a completion date, and if it is not met, then consider the project abandoned and file a claim against the company’s bond for the project.
