A White Haven man who was wanted on two outstanding warrants was involved in a domestic disturbance in Packer Township at 7:20 p.m. July 22, and then resisted arrest, resulting in injury of three officers before finally being wrestled into custody.
State police at the Hazleton barracks said Samuel F. Lakata, 25, whose last known address is Woodhaven Drive, White Haven, was arrested on two counts of simple assault and one count each of aggravated assault, flight to avoid apprehension, resisting arrest and harassment.
Police said they were initially called to a domestic disturbance in progress and learned that one of the participants was Lakata. They were aware there were two active warrants out for his arrest, one on behalf of the Carbon County Adult Probation Office, alleging a parole violation, and the other on behalf of state police who charged him with a felony charge of criminal trespass.
Police said when they arrived at the home on the 1500 block of Packer Drive, Packer Township, they saw a vehicle off to the side of the residence with a woman in the driver’s side seat and Lakata hiding on the floor in the back of the car.
When police ordered him out of the vehicle, Lakata ran away. Police chased him about 80 yards when Lakata came upon a stream, hesitated and was tackled by a trooper. Police said he continued to resist arrest even after an officer deployed his conducted electrical weapon and used oleoresin capsicum spray, both of which police said had minimal or no effect on the defendant. Police said officers needed to use force to place Lakata into custody.
During the apprehension, trooper Joseph Maletz sustained contusions of the right side of his neck and left hand; Cpl. Matthew Knock sustained a contusion of the right hand; and trooper Brent Beaver suffered an injury to his right hand and contusions to his left bicep and left forearm.
