Weekend temps could rival hottest in nearly a decade

For those of us who think it’s hot now, wait, because we ain’t seen nothing yet.

The sweltering heat and staggering humidity could lead to weekend temperatures that are expected to rival the hottest days not seen in nearly a decade.

However, we could catch a bit of a break today as long as there’s a fair amount of cloudiness, with the high temperature expected to be in the mid-80s, according to Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.

But, once the cloudiness and shower threat moves out to the East, he said that will lead to some hot and humid weather Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the temperature expected to be in the 90s all three days.

Kines said temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s on Saturday, and noted that Sunday could be just as hot.

“The humidity is going to be on the oppressive side,” he said. “This air mass that comes in means business.”

Kines stressed the importance of staying in cool areas.

“If you’ve got air conditioning, you’ll be using it, if you’ve got a pool you’ll be using it,” he said. “You’ll probably have lots of friends.”

Kines cautioned to be outdoors as little as possible, and to wear hats with brims on to help shade your face some.

“If you have to do work outside, it’s best to do it very early in the day, or very late in the day to avoid the extreme heat,” he said. “If you have to be outside, wear lightweight clothing and light-colored clothing that tends to reflect some of the sun’s rays, as opposed to the darker colors that absorb it.”

What’s more, Kines said nighttime lows are only expected to be in the 70s, “which isn’t very low.”

“I don’t know what to say if you don’t have air conditioning; you’re going to suffer, no ifs, ands or buts, it’s not going to be a great time for you,” he said. “You’ve got to keep yourself hydrated, drink plenty of water.”

Kines said the last time our area had highs in the mid-90s was Aug. 6 of last year, when the mercury hit 96.

“I think one of the weekend days could get higher than that,” he said.

Kines said the warmest it’s been in recent memory was 100 degrees on July 23, 2011, which came on the heels of a 97-degree day on July 22 of that year.

“This may be comparable to do that,” he said.

But, don’t fret: Kines said temperatures are expected to drop by next week.

“We will enjoy some relief in the early part of next week with a cold front,” he said. “The temps will become trimmed, which will be very welcomed.”
