Franklin Township has been asked to consider a fireworks ordinance.
Resident Jim Washburn asked township supervisors on Tuesday if the township planned to have a fireworks ordinance.
Washburn said that he heard fireworks being set off two to three weeks before the Fourth of July holiday.
“Fun is fun,” Washburn said. “If they have no consideration, then it becomes fair game.”
Supervisor Robin Cressley said the matter was something for the board to look into.
“It’s going to be hard to enforce,” Cressley said. “Let’s look around, see what other townships are doing about it.”
Washburn said he believes the situation is out of hand.
“I’m not above people having fun,” he said. “It’s all nights of the week sometimes.”
The township currently does not have a fireworks ordinance, supervisors said.
After the meeting, the board said it hadn’t received any prior complaints about fireworks.
The state enacted Act 43 in 2017, which allows residents to buy larger fireworks, like Roman candles and bottle rockets.
The law replaced the Fireworks Act of 1939, which only allowed residents to purchase ground-based fireworks, such as fountains.
