“3 Thursdays in July” speakers program to start up

The Kibler School Committee of the Palmerton Area Historical Society will hold the annual “3 Thursdays in July” speakers program starting this Thursday.

It will start at 7 p.m. with Barry Reed, nature columnist for the Times News, who will discuss the habitats and behaviors of the reptiles and amphibians of Carbon County, and will supplement his talk with photos.

On July 18, Jim Vogt, president of the Aquashicola/ Pohopoco Watershed Conservancy, will explain how the health of a stream can be measured by the quantity of aquatic life in the water. With the right information, ordinary people can monitor the level of pollution in our local streams and creeks.

On July 25, members of the committee will bring samples of “Pennsylvania Dutch Cuisine” to share. They will talk about the history of the recipes, and the recipes will be available at the meeting.

All of the “3 Thursdays in July” programs will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at the restored Kibler One-Room School, located at 6495 Pohopoco Drive, about 6.5 miles from the intersection of Harrity Road and Pohopoco across from Beltzville State Park.

After the evenings’ programs, audience members are invited to stay for light refreshments.
