Tamaqua borough residents received some good news this week. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin milling and paving work on Route 209, Spruce Street and Lehigh Street, including Stadium Hill, at the beginning of August. The work must be completed before school returns to session in late August. Following last summer’s detour for work on West Broad Street, the streets took a beating, and this spring’s wet weather hasn’t helped.
In other business, council approved a proposal from Larry McCullion and Son Electric to replace the HVAC system in the police department at a cost of $9,300. Council approved a proposal from Lykens Valley Contractors to replace the roof at the pool concession stand with a metal roof at a cost of $10,091.83 to be paid from the concession stand fund, and a proposal to reconstruct the roof on the small picnic pavilion in the Bungalow Park at a cost of $2,800, which will also be paid from the concession stand fund.
Council approved a $25,000 match for the submission of a grant application to fund the “Tamaqua Choose Happiness” proposal, a Community and Economic Development initiative.
Council will install two “Children at Play” signs in the 300 block of North Elizabeth Street.
Council also held an executive session before the meeting to discuss personnel issues.
