Vehicle rams rear of garbage truck; passenger killed

A vehicle rammed the rear of a garbage truck early Tuesday morning in Schuylkill County resulting in the death of one man and serious injuries to another.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said the crash occurred at 6:15 a.m. along Route 443 (Long Run Road), in Wayne Township.

Troopers said Joseph A. Kopinetz, 48, of Pine Grove, was driving a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser eastbound when his vehicle rammed the rear of a Sterling Acterra garbage truck, which was also eastbound and stopped, partially in the eastbound lane and partially on the shoulder, with its hazard lights activated. Troopers said Kopinetz did not brake or slow down before impact.

After impact the Cruiser flipped on its driver’s side. A passenger in the vehicle, Robert D. Schaeffer, 63, of Pine Grove, died of injuries he sustained in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kopinetz sustained serious injuries and was flown from the scene to the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Both men were not wearing seat belts.

The driver of the garbage truck, William R. Moyer, 77, of Pine Grove, was not injured.

The PT Cruiser was towed, but the truck was driven from the scene.

The crash is still under investigation, troopers said.
