Memories of St. Michael’s

I realize that nothing can be done, but I would like to share this story. My grandfather John Hajcak was a coal miner and raised seven children. The family belonged to St. Michael’s parish. My father and his brothers and sisters had to learn English from the good sisters as they only spoke Slovak. I know this story is similar to others throughout the Coal Region.

My Aunt Annie told me this story that stuck with me for years. My grandfather liked to sit on the left side of the church so he could see the sunlight coming through a stained-glass window. He had a brother Michael who was killed in a coal mine, and on that window was his brother’s name, Michael Hajcak, and he would feel like his brother was saying hello. I would look at it myself and remember that beautiful story.

The windows from this beautiful church were taken out. I hope the Allentown Diocese and the bishop can make some nice money on it, but I think of it meaning much more.

Thank you!
