5 people hurt in collision on Rt. 54 in Hometown

Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 11:43 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Mahanoy and Marian avenues in Hometown.

The crash site is at the bottom of Mintzer’s Hill, where Route 54 turns onto Marian Avenue.

Rush Township police said the crash occurred when a Jeep Liberty operated by a 17-year-old male from Summit Hill pulled out from a stop intersection on Marian Avenue when it was unsafe to do so, colliding with a Nissan Murano driven by Maryann Grega of Weatherly traveling on Mahanoy Avenue (Route 54).

Police said after the initial impact, the Jeep flipped onto its roof. The driver was trapped inside the vehicle and was extricated by firefighters from the Hometown Fire Department, police said.

Police said he and three other male teens, as well as Grega, were all treated at the scene and transported to local medical facilities for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damages and were towed from the scene.

Police were also assisted at the scene by the Hometown Fire Police, McAdoo Ambulance, Tamaqua Ambulance and APTS Ambulance.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
