Meeting tonight

The West End Park And Open Space Commission is slated to meet at 6:30 tonight at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville.

Legion Auxiliary

The Legion Auxiliary will hold its monthly meeting at 7 tonight at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert.

PVEN board

The board of directors for the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church in Brodheadsville.

Missions dinner

West End Missions will again serve dinner from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert.

School board

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Administrative Building.

WELL Board

The West End Little League Board of Directors will meet in closed session at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Park building in Brodheadsville.

Next Thursday is the public session to which everyone is invited, also at 7:30 p.m. and meeting at the Chestnuthill Township Park.

Annual yard sale

Polk Township Historical Society will hold its annual yard sale on from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Polk Township Municipal Building in Kresgeville.

Donations of clean, usable items will be accepted and greatly appreciated today and Thursday after 9 a.m. and during the sale on Friday and Saturday at the Municipal Building. For additional information, call Pat at 610-681-8984.

Chestnuthill Seniors

The Senior Center meeting at Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, in the fellowship hall under the umbrella of Monroe County Seniors, begins the day on Friday with coffee and tea at 9 a.m.

At 10 a.m. it’s time for Healthy Steps in Motion with Dolores.

At 11:30 a.m. the lunch hour begins. The lite-fare menu includes pasta and vegetables salad, chick pea salad, banana/Jell-o and pudding.

The regular fare menu is pasta primavera, Brussels sprouts, California blend and pineapple.

Next Wednesday’s schedule is similar with Friday’s, but there is time for blood pressure screening from 10 to 11 a.m.as well as the exercise.

The lite-fare menu is to be ham and Swiss, coleslaw, nectarine, whole grain bread.

The regular menu lists beef Stroganoff with noodles, cauliflower, harvest medley and sliced peaches.

Orders for each day’s meal must be placed with site manager Dolores Casalaspro at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.

Royal Rangers

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church’s Royal Rangers program is having a campout and fishing trip on Friday and Saturday.

The camping out will take place at the church in Brodheadsville and the trip for fishing will take place in Effort.

There is a registration and fee for members participating.

Breakfast served

McMichaels UMC is holding a donation-only breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Postal food drive

This Saturday is the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

West Enders can join in that day in impacting local hunger as, according to Karen Mazurkiewicz, Strategic Communications USPS — Central Pennsylvania and Western New York Districts in Buffalo, New York, when food is left out, the carriers get it to local food banks.

Registration deadline

The deadline for the Monroe County Garden Club May luncheon on May 22, is this Saturday.

Mother’s Day craft

Ross Township Park on Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg is the location for a free Mother’s Day craft-making time Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. It will include a beaded butterfly magnet with poem as well as a decorated flower pot and live flower.

It is being hosted by the West End Park and Open Space Commission.

Prayer shawl

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church’s Prayer shawl ministry will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday. Those shawls are given to grieving families.

Spaghetti dinner

Repairs are needed at the Rimrock Masonic Center so a fundraising spaghetti dinner, all-you-can-eat and salad bar, is being held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Fellowship breakfast

Effort UMC’s Trustees will be cooking breakfast on Sunday, Mother’s Day, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. It is a freewill donation breakfast that supports the capital improvements of the church.

Honoring mothers

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, will have a social hour to honor mothers after its two worship services, and Confirmation class.

The second service, at 10:30 a.m. will include Sunday school and soil conservation as well as honoring mothers.

Riders meet

The Riders at the American Legion in Gilbert will meet for the group’s monthly meeting on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Final officer nominations/elections will be held during the meeting.

The meeting of the Eldred Township Historical Society has been changed from May 21 to May 14. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the township municipal building in Kunkletown.

Senior spelling bee

The Monroe County Senior spelling bee will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Northampton Community College, Monroe Campus, Keystone Room, in Tannersville.

Fitness walk

The 23rd Annual Senior Fitness Walk will be taking place in downtown Stroudsburg on May 15.

Area seniors are invited to devote a morning of fitness with the Monroe County Area Agency on Aging’s Health and Wellness Program, Pocono Family YMCA, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 10 a.m. This is a 1-mile walk through downtown Stroudsburg.

Entertainment will be provided as well as refreshments, festivities and door prizes that will follow the walk at the Pocono YMCA.

Early registration is strongly encouraged. The first 100 registrants will receive a free T-shirt.

Roosevelts’ tea time

The special event announced by the Western Pocono Community Library as happening this coming week at The Heritage Center of the Western Pocono Community Library, Tea Time with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, has been postponed.

It is being rescheduled for during the summer.

Annual banquet

The GFWC Western Pocono Women’s Club will hold its annual May banquet at the Boulder View Restaurant on May 20. However, reservations and payment are due with member Mary Minnucci by May 15.

At the banquet, Pat Mackes of Effort will install the officers for the year, and Greta Weaver will initiate six new members.

Submarine vets

The U.S. Submarine Veterans, Pocono Base, meets regularly on the third Wednesday of each month at the Wilson Fisher American Legion, Post 413, Old Route 940, in Pocono Pines. It is a local chapter of the national organization U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. Submarine veterans from all eras are encouraged to join. This month’s meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 15. The Western Pocono Community Library will host Walter Stoffel, local freelance writer and publisher, at a book signing at 6:30 p.m. May 16 in the Community Room.

He will read “Lance: A Spirit Unbroken,” and will also have books available or purchase.

WEFCO happenings

The West End Fire Company responded to 34 incidents in April, according to Chief Don Zipp. Though the monthly total is less than last year, the total of calls so far is still 143.

The fire company, along with the other three fire departments that cover the West End, including Blue Ridge, Polk and Kunkletown, are in the midst of planning a carnival for the four fire departments that is slated to take place at the West End Fairgrounds June 27-29.

It will be a fundraiser for the four departments and is being organized by some community supporters of the fire service.

In addition, West End is also in the process of running several members from its department and Polk Township Fire through a refresher training so that they are ready to take the examination for their Firefighter 1 Certification.

This certification is voluntary in Pennsylvania.

It is a written and practical examination that verifies the firefighters have the knowledge, skills and abilities to meet the minimum requirements for firefighting.

Volunteers needed

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers to help with home repairs for deserving folks in Monroe County who cannot do the work themselves due to lack of funds or skills.

Habitat needs help to finish 12 home preservation projects before June 30.
