Lehighton Cemetery Walk to focus on history
Some like to take a nice stroll through the park.
But for those in search of a more authentic experience, the fourth annual Lehighton Cemetery Walk ought to be right up their alley.
Presented by the Lehighton Area Heritage Alliance, the walk will take place from 2-6 p.m. Saturday at Fourth and Alum streets. The rain date is Sunday.
Kathy Long, event organizer, said the walk aims to preserve the town’s history through stories told.
“It is not a ghostly thing,” Long said. “It’s really very interesting.”
Long said visitors will be led through the cemetery by tour guides and will stop at four sites to hear the stories of borough ancestors who are buried in the Lehighton Cemetery.
She said this year’s event is focused all on teachers.
This year’s walk will feature Paul Smith, Lew Ginder, the Geisel sisters, and the Ronemus sisters.
Smith was a music teacher, director of the Lehighton Band and Boys & Girls Band, as well as founder of the Zion Opera Workshop and the Zion Ecumenical Cantata; Ginder was a gym teacher, coach and owner of Camp Chickawaki; the Geisel sisters were kindergarten and fourth-grade schoolteachers at the former First Ward Elementary School; and the Ronemus sisters were second- and fifth-grade schoolteachers at First Ward Elementary.
“It’s nice to learn the lives of teachers outside of the classroom,” Long said. “A lot of kids think teachers live in school, and this gives them a different perspective.”
Long said the mausoleum will be open, and added that the event is a huge fundraiser for the Lehighton Area Heritage Alliance.
There is no admission charge for the walk; however, Long said a freewill donation will be taken to benefit the launch of a Lehighton historical society.
“We’re trying to save the history of the Lehighton area, one story at a time,” she said.
