A Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Friday after he admitted he violated the conditions of registration under Megan’s Law.

David Harvey Esterly, 63, of Bowmanstown, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve nine to one day less 24 months in prison after he pleaded to one count of failure to provide accurate registration information relative to Megan’s Law.

Esterly was convicted in Lehigh County of sexual assault and was required to register as a sexual offender under Megan’s Law. He failed to report to the state police a change of employment as required by the law. State police received a tip that Esterly was working at a Bowmanstown business and didn’t report it as required.

Esterly said he had a hard time reading the fine print of the Megan’s Law form outlining his registration requirements, which he had to sign at the time of his sentencing.

Nanovic said that was not an excuse. He said in the future Esterly had better have someone read to him any sections of the law he says he can’t read.

In addition to the prison term, Esterly was ordered to supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee when he’s on parole.

He will begin the jail term at 11 a.m. on April 5.
