Pleasant Valley head coach Jeff Lazowski and his baseball team were more than ready to start the season Tuesday afternoon.

After their first two scheduled games were postponed, the Bears came out swinging against East Stroudsburg South, routing the Cavaliers 16-3 in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game.

“I thought we had a very good effort and a good approach to the game,” Lazowski said. “We were well-prepared. We were champing at the bit here for a good couple days. We were inside the whole entire time practicing and only getting outside a couple of days. Our approach today was focused and we were ready to go.”

Dallas Greenzweig and Dan McEvoy both had big days at the plate for the Bears (1-0). Greenzweig had two hits, while McEvoy registered three hits and three RBIs and ended up a home run shy of the cycle. The offensive outburst was more than enough in the win.

Lazowski talked about some of the things he worked on with Greenzweig.

“He was very big at the plate,” Lazowski said. “One thing we worked on a lot over the offseason is plate approach and working on counts and stuff like that. Every advantage we can take, we like to grab. He did a great job with that.”

East Stroudsburg South (0-1) got on the board first with a two-run homer from Jeremy Laureano in the first inning. From there on out, it was all PV.

Pleasant Valley’s Trevor Knappenberger settled down after giving up the early home run, only allowing a run during the rest of his outing. Lazowski wasn’t worried at all about the setback in the first inning.

“First game, first inning, Trevor’s a veteran guy,” Lazowski said about his pitcher. “He doesn’t let much intimidate him or get under his skin. Even if he does, he won’t let anyone know about it. He’s stoic on the mound and you can’t tell (if anything’s bothering him). He gets in there, knows his stuff and pitches well.

“The next couple of innings, he ended up settling down a little bit and being OK. To help him out, we got down and got right back with the two runs to even it up. We just have to keep after it.”

RBIS

… In addition to McEvoy, two other Bears each had three RBIs in the victory. Brandon Ratti and Nick Cizack combined for knocking in six of Pleasant Valley’s runs.

UP NEXT

… The Bears will face Pocono Mountain East Thursday in their next game. The Cardinals lost to Stroudsburg 9-2 Tuesday.

LAZOWSKI ON ES SOUTH

… “They’re a good ball team. They have a couple hitters that aren’t afraid. They’re aggressive. If they can continue to do that throughout the year, I think they’ll find themselves with a couple of wins,” he said.
