Berks County man charged with assaulting 1-month-old child
A Berks County man faces charges for allegedly assaulting his 1-month-old child in Lansford.
Jordan Dean Balthaser, 19, of Womelsdorf was arrested Wednesday following the investigation.
According to the affidavit filed by the Pennsylvania State Police in Hamburg:
At 9:22 p.m. Tuesday, troopers were dispatched to the Penn State Health St. Joseph Urgent Care in Strausstown, Upper Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, for a 1-month-old with a leg fracture.
Due to the extent of the victim’s injury, the victim was being transported to Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
While there, the tending RN said the results from their X-ray of the victim’s left leg showed fractures that appeared to be spiral in nature and not accidental.
On Wednesday, a doctor from Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center confirmed the type of break, adding that the type of fracture is common in abuse victims.
The victim also had a healing spiral fracture and corner fracture to the right tibia.
Balthaser was then interviewed at the center regarding the victim’s multiple injuries.
Balthaser said that on Monday, he and the child’s mother had arrived at the child’s uncle’s residence in Lansford.
Balthaser said the child woke up around midnight on Tuesday and needed to be changed and fed and then fell back asleep around 12:30 a.m.
At around 5:30 a.m., the child awoke again, crying, and Balthaser said that he was frustrated and grabbed the victim out of his car seat, where he had been sleeping.
Balthaser said that he had placed the victim in his arms and was bouncing the child harder than he usually did.
The baby continued to cry despite Balthaser’s efforts.
Balthaser then intentionally fell back on a couch in a rough manner as he continued to hold the baby.
As he sat, the child’s cry became louder and more “violent.”
Balthaser acknowledged that he knew this cry to be more of a pain cry from a previous medical procedure to treat an abscess.
Balthaser then changed the baby’s diaper and noticed the left leg to be limp and the right heel to be slightly turned inward.
Balthaser acknowledges changing the baby’s diaper throughout the day on Tuesday and noticing the child’s leg to be limp and the baby crying.
It was not until around 7 p.m. on Tuesday that the baby’s paternal grandmother noticed the child’s leg to be swollen and the baby crying in agony that medical attention was sought.
Balthaser faces charges of aggravated assault; endangering welfare of children; simple assault; recklessly endangering another person; and harassment.
He is currently free in lieu of $75,000 unsecured bail, and is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing April 3 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
