Weatherly girls establishing a tradition

Kevin Kringe covets the tradition that girls basketball programs like Marian and Nativity have built over the years.

The Weatherly girls’ basketball coach wants to create that type of tradition within his own program — and he’s doing a pretty good job of it.

The Wreckers’ fifth-year coach and his staff, have already taken a huge step in the right direction.

“It has been a process,” Kringe said.

A process that has really been paying off.

The Wreckers third win over Nativity this season in the District 11/2 subregional semifinal on Tuesday, combined with Susquehanna Community’s victory Salem Christian Academy, not only put them in the subregional final but sealed Weatherly’s second consecutive District 11 Class 1A title.

Prior to Kringe taking over the program, there was only one other district title in girls’ program history. That came back in 1986.

“I would have liked for it to have gone quicker than it has, but it takes some time,” Kringe said about a Wrecker program that has qualified for postseason play four straight seasons after falling short in his first season.

“A lot of patience and a lot of hard work is involved. We are heading in the right direction, but we are still aspiring to be like all those traditional programs that do this year after year.

“Eventually we want to go toe-to-toe with them. We’re trying to build up our name and our reputation.”

Tonight, the District 11 Class A champs will take on District 2 champion, Susquehanna Community at Dunmore High School at 7 p.m. for the District 11/2 Subregional title. Susquehanna Community posted a 39-21 win over Forest City Wednesday night to capture their district crown.

The Wreckers’ staff and players traveled to Mohegan Sun Area at Casey Plaza to get a glimpse of Susquehanna Community firsthand.

“They got to see what they’re like rather than me telling them everything,” Kringe said. “They saw that they like to get the ball inside, they got to see their pace of play, they got to see their press breaks. That will be important to us because we like to press like crazy. So, I think all of those things helped.”

The Sabres (19-6 overall) have some talented players in Mackenzie Steele (Jr., forward), Bethany Maby (Sr., guard), Taylor Huyck (Jr., guard) and Mackenzie Heath (Jr., guard). Huyck is the Sabres’ leading scorer at 14.3 points per game, while Steele (11.8), Heath (6.28) and Maby (6.16) follow right behind.

“Huyck’s very impressive inside. She’s a tall, athletic big. They try to get to her inside,” said Kringe.

The Wreckers have seen Susquehanna Community play. Now they’ll have to stop them.

“We like to keep the momentum going and keep it building,” Kringe said. “Each game, it continues to get bigger. We’re playing better teams. The crowds get bigger. You’re playing for more stuff.

“So, just to feel that big time atmosphere again, we want to keep it going and build more confidence in our kids.”

Don’t expect anything to change as far as the Weatherly game plan is concerned.

“Just be ready for a chaotic, crazy game,” Kringe said. “We’re trying to make it a fast paced game and make it our style of game.”
