Palmerton native to perform at circus arts fest at Panther Valley

The sixth annual Pocono Juggle and Circus Arts Fest is coming to Summit Hill.

The event will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Panther Valley Junior/Senior High school.

“We have performers who have entertained audiences all over the world flying in to perform,” said organizer Kim Laird. “This is not an event just for jugglers and circus artists, but for non-jugglers to enjoy as well.”

The festival will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Visitors can enjoy free open juggling and various circus arts in the gym, as well as over a dozen free workshops being offered by professional jugglers and circus artists.

In addition, there will also be a slack line, human hamster balls, hover crafts and plenty of other things for all skill levels to try.

The big show will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday and include a number of juggling and circus arts performers from around the country and world showcasing their talents in the areas of juggling, acrobatics, partner stunts and more. All seats are $10 general admission and tickets will be available Friday and Saturday. Doors to the high school auditorium open at 6:30 p.m.

This year’s headliner is Thom Wall, who recently finished his London tour with Cirque du Soleil’s TOTEM. Audience members will be on the edge of their seats when Wall balances a half dozen wine glasses on the edge of a knife, dives through a bicycle rim lined with rat traps and more.

Wall has toured the world with his performances, shared the stage with the Rockettes at the Radio City Music Hall, and juggled for thousands all over the U.S. and the world in Cirque du Soleil’s blue and gold circus tent. Wall has earned honors and awards all over the world, including being named to the Top 40 Jugglers of The Year for eight years, as well as being awarded the Medalla “Crotalus Scholaris” from La Universidad Mesoamericana in Mexico in 2015, and having won both bronze and silver medals at the International Jugglers’ Association championships.

Also on the bill is Austin Smith, who was born and raised in Palmerton and has since toured the U.S. and Canada performing street shows.

Smith is one of those rare second-generation jugglers, having learned from his dad at the age of 7.

He’s hard to miss on Burlington, Vermont’s, iconic Church Street, where he frequently can be found busking.

Last year, he helped form the Queen City Circus Collective to unite the jugglers, acrobats and other circus friends in northern Vermont. He more recently brought home a silver medal in the IJA Numbers Competitions.

The three-day event is hosted by the Panther Valley Junior/Senior High School Juggle/Circus Arts Club and the school’s PTO.

The PTO will have a food stand open throughout the weekend.

Community sponsorship has been provided by the Inn at Jim Thorpe.

Organizers of the event are Kim Laird and Rob Barowski, teachers at Panther Valley and Lehighton Area High School.
