Inmate death in Monroe

An inmate at Monroe County Correctional Facility died of an apparent suicide on Friday, according to state police.

A news release identified the inmate as Brian B. Sommers Jr., 34.

An ambulance was called to the jail at 4:40 p.m. for the attempted suicide. It transported Sommers to St. Luke’s Hospital-Monroe Campus. Later that evening he was transported to the Intensive Care Unit of St. Luke’s Bethlehem campus.

Doctors pronounced Sommers dead on Friday.

Warden Garry Heidle was unavailable for comment on Tuesday.

According to court documents, Sommers was serving sentences in multiple cases after pleading guilty to theft charges in 2017.

It is the first suicide at Monroe County Correctional Facility since 2011.
