Carbon County court

A Carbon County man spent 41 days in the county prison for stealing seafood from a county business. He was one of eight defendants in pending criminal cases to enter a guilty plea on Monday before Carbon President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

Mahoning incident

Trevor Hunsicker

, 31, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of retail theft. He was charged by Mahoning Township police with entering the Giant Market, in the Carbon Plaza Mall, on Oct. 23, 2018, and taking various seafood items valued at $218.88. He was stopped by security personnel.

Nanovic sentenced him to time-served (41 days) to one day less 24 months and immediately paroled him from the county prison.

Hunsicker said, “I’m not a bad guy.” He blamed his actions on a long-term drug addiction problem. He told the court he was addicted to heroin, saying he has been addicted for the past 16 years.

In addition to the prison term, Nanovic ordered Hunsicker to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample and make restitution of $218.88 to Giant.

Other pleas

Tyler James Easterly

, 27, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count each of possession of a prohibitive offensive weapon — brass knuckles, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested on Oct. 2, 2017, by Palmerton police. Police responded to a garage to the rear of an address in the 400 block of Lehigh Avenue and found Easterly along with various drug paraphernalia and the brass knuckles. According to the defendant, the brass knuckles were hanging on a wall in the garage and he didn’t realize they were a prohibitive offensive weapon.

Nanovic placed him on probation for a year, which is consecutive to a sentence he is now serving, and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use.

Suzanne Dee Frohnheiser

, 27, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count of retail theft. She was arrested on Dec. 7, 2018, by Nesquehoning police at the Dollar General Store along East Catawissa Street.

She admitted to a drug addiction problem, methamphetamine and heroin.

Nanovic placed her on probation for a year, consecutive to a term she is serving in the county prison for a probation violation, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use and make restitution of $29.76 to the store.

Brandon Paul Hannick

, 32, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count of retail theft, as a felony. He was arrested on Aug. 12, 2018, by Mahoning Township police at the Walmart store.

Police said he would return merchandise not purchased at the store for a cash refund. He did it four times in three days, police said. He also is on probation in Luzerne County for another retail theft.

Nanovic placed him on probation for six months, consecutive to Luzerne County, and ordered he make restitution of $172.26.

Erick Ti Whaley

, 22, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to two counts of simple assault for incidents involving the same victim at the same location.

He was arrested on Oct. 11 and Nov. 21, 2018, at a residence along East Catawissa Street with a female victim. Police responded to both incidents as a domestic assault. In both incidents police found the woman bloody, and she told police she had been choked by Whaley.

Whaley said he and the woman have since reconciled and are attending counseling sessions.

Nanovic placed him on probation for a year on each count with the terms running consecutively, and ordered he get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and attend and successfully complete anger management counseling.

Drug cases

Corey Scott Moody

, 42, of Orefield, Lehigh County, pleaded to one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under suspension. He was arrested on Dec. 17, 2018, along Route 902 by Summit Hill police following a traffic stop.

He was placed on probation for six months on the drug count and ordered to pay a fine of $200 on the suspension charge. He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation.

Derek Michael Wentz

, 31, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count each of possession of a small amount of marijuana and driving under suspension - DUI related. He was arrested on Nov. 5, 2017, by state police at Lehighton, following a traffic stop along Route 248 at Bowmanstown. Troopers indicated methamphetamine was found in the vehicle.

On the drug count he was fined $250. On the suspension count he was sentenced to serve 60 days in jail and pay a fine of $500. He was given credit for 61 days spent in an inpatient rehabilitation program and paroled.

DUI charge

Joseph Steven Nenscel

, 70, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of driving under the influence. He was arrested on Feb. 9, 2018, along Fifth Street by Palmerton police after being involved in a crash. A test revealed a 0.18 BAC.

A first offense, he was sentenced to serve 48 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $500, one-year license suspension, make restitution of $182.56 to the victim of the crash and follow any recommendation of his drug and alcohol evaluation.

He will begin the jail term at noon on Feb. 22.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
