Man kills his ex over breakup

A Berks County man upset over the breakup with his girlfriend, traveled to the Lower Towamensing Township home where she lived with her parents on Thursday.

There, police said he bludgeoned, stabbed and shot her multiple times before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide.

Lehighton State Police said Kyle Gruver, 27, of Fleetwood, killed Megan Leland, 26, of Palmerton, and then killed himself in an apparent suicide at a home at 4400 block of Little Gap Road.

Police said they received a call at 5:56 p.m. Thursday about a possible homicide at that address. Troopers responded to the scene and found the two bodies, later identified as Leland and Gruver.

The Troop N Major Case Team was activated to investigate. Through interviews, police determined that Gruver was distraught over a recent breakup with Leland.

Police said Gruver arrived at Leland’s residence sometime between 7 a.m. and 5:52 p.m.

Police said this is an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public.

According to online records, Leland was a 2010 graduate of Palmerton Area High School, where she had been on the honor roll. Gruver graduated from Fleetwood High School in 2009. According to his Facebook page, he worked for East Penn Manufacturing, a company that manufactures batteries.

Trooper Nicholas De La Iglesia, based at the Lehighton state police barracks, is the lead investigator on the case. Police said the investigation continues.
