Weissport OKs Alzheimer’s walk

Weissport Borough Council has approved a request from Jeff Elder, the chairman of the Alzheimer’s Association of Carbon County to have a walk beginning in the Weissport park on Sept. 21. The walk will progress to the canal D&L trail. Elder said that participants can walk any distance they choose. After the walk there will be entertainment and food available in the park.

Elder said the event would be a good resource to allow families affected by Alzheimer’s to socialize as well as to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. The money will be used for Alzheimer’s research.

Dr. Gary Schoenberger added, “Alzheimer’s is the long goodbye.”

Schoenberger said money isn’t being put toward research as much as some other diseases. He said doctors are finding more and more ways to hold off the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease but they are a long way from a cure.

The event is in the early planning stages. Elder said a meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Jacob’s United Church of Christ. All are welcome to attend.

Mayor Paulette Watson was not in attendance and will need to authorize the use of the park.
