Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua had strong showings at the Schuylkill League wrestling tournament on Friday.

WRESTLING

Schuylkill Championships

Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua led the way after the first night of the Schuylkill League Tournament.

The Oympians and Raiders left Pottsville’s Martz Hall with six wrestlers headed to today’s semifinals.

William Schwartz (106), Gabe Heaney (113), Austin Williams (182), Kendall Herron (195), Ethan Mordaunt (220) and Derek Hunter (285) all reached the semis for Jim Thorpe. Randy Steigerwalt (126), Aaron Coccio (132), Khalid Holland (160), Nate Wickersham (170), Carson Krell (182) and Bronson Strouse (285) advanced for Tamaqua.

Lehighton’s Lukas Ferguson (106), Lucas Sangiuliano (132), Chris Whiteman (145) and Logan Pagotto (152) also advanced to the semifinals.

Tamaqua in third in the team standings with 71 points, while the Indians are fifth with 63.

The semifinals are set for 9 a.m. with fourth-round consolations to follow at 11 a.m. The championship finals, along with the third- and fifth-place bouts will take place at at 12:30 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marian-Schuylkill Haven

Schuylkill Haven used a balanced attack to down Marian 54-44.

Albe Evans led three Hurricanes (10-5) in double figures with 19 points. Mason Carter added 18 points, while Mason Ulsh contributed 12.

Tyler Fritz scored a team-high 23 points for the Colts (7-9).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Panther Valley-Palisades

Palisades used a big third quarter to pull away from Panther Valley en route to a 61-46 non-league win.

Trinity Williams scored 26 points for the Pirates (7-8), who outscored PV 19-7 in the third period. Sydney Odle added 16 points.

Erika Dubosky netted a game-high 28 points for the Panthers (6-10), who trailed 27-25 at the intermission. PV has lost 10 of its last 11.
