PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A highway patrol officer has been seriously injured in a crash in Philadelphia.
Police Commissioner Richard Ross says 48-year-old Andy Chan was riding his motorcycle in northeast Philadelphia on Thursday evening when he was struck and thrown from his vehicle. The Philadelphia Police Department said in a statement that Chan was on his way to work at the time of the crash.
Ross says Chan has been hospitalized in critical condition with a significant head injury.
Images of the scene showed a badly damaged motorcycle lying in the road.
Authorities say the driver who struck Chan remained at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Chan has been on the force for 24 years, and Ross says he is “one heck of a police officer.”
