Lawsuit: 2nd officer was attacked by police dog

WILKES-BARRE (AP) — A second police officer has been added to a lawsuit against the city of Wilkes-Barre over alleged attacks by a police dog.

The suit claims the two officers were attacked separately by the dog, named Chase, and that the city put the dog and its handler into service before they’d completed required training.

The suit seeks damages on counts including assault, battery and negligence.

Officer Shane Smith alleges he was searching for a suspect on Sept. 4 when the dog grabbed his leg and dragged him to the ground. Smith has been out of work since the incident, the suit claims.

The Times Leader reports the same dog attacked Officer Anthony Falcone in December 2017, forcing him to miss four months of work.

The city declined comment on the lawsuit.
