An Eldred Township man accused of intentionally setting fire to his residence Friday afternoon faces additional charges for trying to disarm a state trooper.

Nicholas Alexander Hadley, 32, “lunged across the interview room table” and “reached twice for trooper Justin Magluilo’s duty belt,” while being questioned about the fire, police wrote in an affidavit of probable cause filed Tuesday at Magisterial District Judge William Kissner’s office in Palmerton.

Hadley faces charges of disarming a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Police said Hadley admitted to trying to reach for the trooper’s weapon.

Bail was set at $50,000 cash.

Hadley was arrested Friday after police said he purposely set fire to a couch soaked in a flammable liquid at his Chestnut Ridge Drive home around 3:15 p.m.

Members of the Kunkletown, Polk, West End, Blue Ridge and Towamensing Township volunteer fire departments responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.

Hadley described to police how he poured gasoline on the couch in his living room on the upper level of the residence and used a green plastic cigarette lighter to start the fire.

Hadley still had the green plastic cigarette lighter when he was arrested.

No one was inside the residence at the time of the fire.

Hadley is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Friday before District Judge Danielle Travagline of Tobyhanna on the arson, causing or risking catastrophe, and recklessly endangering another person charges, and Jan. 23 before Kissner on the disarming a law enforcement and resisting arrest charges.
