Two York County men have been arrested and charged with assaulting a state game commission officer on Saturday morning in Schuylkill County.
State police at Schuylkill Haven said Wade Michael Winemiller, 57, of Wrightsville, and Thomas Earl Kelly Jr., 57, of Stewartstown, were arrested and charged in connection with the incident that occurred about 10 a.m. in a wooded area located off Peach Mountain Road in Norwegian Township.
Winemiller was taken into custody on Monday and arraigned before on-call District Judge Anthony J. Kilker, of Shenandoah. He was committed to the county prison in Pottsville after failing to post $150,000 straight cash bail. Kelly was arrested on Tuesday and arraigned before District Judge David A. Plachko, of Port Carbon, and released after posting 10 percent of $100,000 bail.
Troopers said both men have been charged with aggravated and simple assault, robbery, resisting arrest and multiple other charges.
According to troopers about 9:20 a.m. on Saturday the game commission received a complaint of a hunting violation in the area. A game officer, a 58-year-old man, who was not identified by troopers, arrived on scene to investigate. The officer saw the two men on all-terrain vehicles. The officer approached the men and began to question them.
A physical altercation occurred between the officer and the two men, with the officer discharging one round from his duty weapon.
The suspects then fled the scene on their ATVs towards the Arnot’s Addition area of Saint Clair. The officer was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital East, Pottsville, where he was treated and released.
