At its regular monthly meeting Wednesday night, the Weatherly Area school directors voted to re-hire the son of one of its own. Frederick Herling, son of board member Georgeann Herling was one of two coaches re-appointed to the position of assistant boys basketball coach. Herling held the same position last season.
"The assistants hired this evening are returning from the previous season based on the recommendation of the head coach," said director Chad Obert, chairman of the board's athletic committee. The positions pay $2,650 for the season.
With board members Amy Potsko and Matthew vonFrisch absent from the meeting, the board voted 6-0 in favor of the hiring. Board member Herling abstained.
The board also announced that it met in executive session to discuss school security and safety. The meeting agenda called for the hiring of an unnamed individual for the position of school police officer, but that item was removed. Superintendent Teresa Young indicated that a candidate was interviewed and identified as someone to whom the board would make an offer of employment, but "it didn't work out, so we will re-advertised the position," she said.
Deborah Rynd was approved to the substitute "ermergency permit" permit teacher list for 2018-19 school year and Samantha Minich was hired as a part-time cleaning aide at the hourly rate of $9.80 per the WAESPA contract.
The board also authorized payment of bills totaling more than $1.18 million for October through November 14.
Students of the month were recognized. Mason Podgers, senior, Ethan Darraugh, 6th grade, Dominic Collins, 7th grade, and Jocelyn Gonzalez, 8th grade, were congratulated by the board. Board member Georgeann Herling also thanked Podgers for playing 'Taps' at the American Legion's Veterans Day service.
The next caucus meeting is scheduled for December 5 at 7pm in the middle school LGI room.
