The number of trees that have been adopted for Walnutport’s second annual Christmas tree lighting event continues to grow.

Councilwoman Jennifer Wentz announced at Thursday’s borough council meeting that 48 trees have been adopted for the event.

“Hopefully we’ll hit 50,” Wentz said, adding that doing so would nearly double last year’s event, which saw 27 trees decorated in the borough park.

Wentz said this year’s event will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 1 at the recreation center, located at 215 Lincoln Ave.

Santa will be on hand, and light refreshments will be served.

The lighting ceremony will be at 5 p.m.

The cost to adopt a tree is $40.

All trees will stand between 5 and 6 feet tall. Tree stands will be provided, along with a tree number once donations are confirmed.

Trees may be decorated after noon from Nov. 17-30. All trees must be decorated by Nov. 30 so that electricity can be tested and any necessary changes can be made.

The recreation board will provide and set up a tree, including the tree stand.

Those who adopt a tree would only have to decorate it. They must use LED lights when decorating, and limit their lights to no more than 300.

Trees using non-LED lighting will not be plugged in, and they will be asked to switch them out.

An 8- to 10-foot outdoor extension cord labeled with name, tree stand and extending out should be attached.

The electricity won’t be turned on as trees are decorated, so test the lights before decorating.

Neither tinsel, similar items nor glass ornaments are to be used. All ornaments that are used should be secured with twist-ties or pipe cleaners.

Trees will need to be undecorated between Jan. 13-18.

All trees will be disposed of on Jan. 21. Any decorations or lights that remain on the trees after Jan. 18 will be disposed of as well.

Money raised by this event will benefit the recreation board and be used to fund future projects.

All donations can be made payable to the Borough of Walnutport Recreation Board.

The borough is limiting the number of trees that can be adopted, meaning they will be assigned on a first-come basis.

Those not interested in adopting a tree can help with donations to offset the cost of the trees and the tree stands. Donations of refreshments and volunteers to help with preparations are welcome.
