Marian Hall of Fame ceremony is Sunday

Marian High School will induct 11 former athletes into its Hall of Fame during a dinner program scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28, at Capriotti’s, Tresckow.

The event will begin with a social hour from 3-4 p.m., followed by the dinner at 4 p.m. and the induction ceremony around 5:15 p.m., when former Marian Principal and 2006 HOF inductee John P. “Jack” Malarkey will be the master of ceremonies.

Those who will be inducted as members of the Class of 2018 are: Brent “Chuck” Andrew, ’98; Brianne (Homyak) Baronna, ’97; Donna (Ceci) Fuehrer, ’79; Jill (Kemmerle) Grover, ’96; Joe Horvat, ’97; Scott Holloman, ’98; Greg Izzo, ’88; Jim McHugh, ’82; Pat Morgans, ’86; Joe Regalis, ’67; and Wayne Stehle, ’83.

To be inducted are:

Brent (Chuck) Andrew

Brent is a 1998 Marian graduate. He was a four-year starter in football and a three-year starter in basketball, earning him seven varsity letters. Brent started on Marian’s basketball team during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons finishing his career with 993 total points, including a trip to the Eastern finals. Marian went to the PIAA playoffs two out of the three years Brent started on the basketball team. Andrew led the Colts in scoring his senior season averaging 15.3 points per game. He was named team captain his senior year. He was a first team Schuylkill League All-Star. Brent was the first freshman to start at the quarterback position in Stan Dakosty’s first 18 years of coaching at Marian. In his freshman season, Brent amassed 1,244 yards and threw nine touchdowns during the sevengames he was at the helm. During his sophomore season in 1996 he had 825 passing yards. Despite missing 2 games as a junior, Brent threw for 1,579 yards while completing 105 out of 189 passes for 14 touchdowns and leading the Colts to the District 11 Class 2A finals. Brent’s best single game was against South Williamsport in his senior year when he completed 23 out of 33 passes for 292 yards and ran for 72 yards for a total of 364 yards. As a senior, Brent completed 131 out of 230 passes, accumulating 17 touchdowns and 1,966 yards, leading the Colts to another District 11 Class 2A final appearance. Brent earned many accolades his senior year, being named to the Schuylkill County All Star Team, Associated Press Small School All-State first team as a quarterback, and the Big 33 team. For his career, Brent threw for 5,614 yards and 48 touchdowns. He completed 381 of 758 passes (50.3 percent) during 4 seasons. He is ranked on Pennsylvania’s All-Time list for career passing yards and is in the top 10 of any quarterback who played during the years 1991-2000. Brent continued his football career at Valley Forge Military College, Hofstra University and Millersville University. Brent has been employed by Concern Treatment Unit for Boys since 2001. He is married to Rodeen Lechleitner Ph.D. and they have a daughter Mautileen and reside in Lake Hauto.

Brianne Homyak Baronna

Brianne is a 1997 graduate of Marian. She participated in basketball, volleyball and softball. She excelled in all three sports. In volleyball, she was 1st Team All State in 1997.Won the Schuylkill League Volleyball championship in 1997. That year the Fillies were the District 11 runner up. Brianne was the Nova Care Athlete of the Month for September 1997. She made the District 11 All Star Team in 1995 and 1996. She was the Times News Volleyball Player of the Year in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Brianne was the Blue Ridge Cable Female Athlete of the season in 1996. In 1995 she had 97 kills, 25 blocks and 34 aces. In basketball Brianne finished her career averaging 16.6 pts per game and finished her career with 1065 points. She also led the team in rebounds. Brianne was the WNEP Sports Star of the week in March of 1997. In January of 1997 she was selected to play for the PA vs. MD basketball game. In softball, her batting average was .466 in 1995 and .477 in 1996. She was selected to the All Area second team in 1995. Brianne was the Times News Female Athlete of the Year for 1997.Brianne went onto play basketball and softball for Kutztown University. She excelled on the basketball court achieving many milestones including playing in four consecutive PSAC playoff series. She was inducted into Kutztown University Hall of Fame. She was captain for the 2000-2001 team. In Softball she had a career batting average of .366 and was selected as first team All PSAC 2 times. She played one season for the WABA, Scranton Scream. She married fellow Basketball standout at Kutztown, Sammy Barona. They have 3 children, Sammy Jr., Amani, and Eviana. They reside in Northampton, Pa.

Donna Ceci Fuehrer

Donna is a 1979 graduate of Marian. She was primarily involved with the track and field teams, but also participated in bowling, gymnastics, a majorette and the artist for the school newspaper, the MarianNews. In 1975, her freshman year, she started on the track team doing the hurdles, long jump and triple jump. She also continued with these same events during her sophomore year. It was by chance that she came upon the shot put.During a meet they needed another girl to throw the shot put so the other girls on the team encouraged her to “just to throw the thing.” Donna did and she threw it for 32 feet. A lot farther than anyone else ever threw who were on the team. Donna said this started her love for this sport. She also participated in other throwing events such as the discus and javelin. Donna would regularly come in first or second in all the throwing events. She would also finish second in the high jump. In 1978, Donna went to Districts and threw the shot put for 34-11 1/2, a new District record. That throw allowed her to participate at the State meet. She did not place in any event there. In 1979 she again did very well in the throwing events. She returned to Districts and set another record with a throw of 39-9 3/4in the shot put. Again she went to the State meet but did not place once again. Donna entered the work force after graduating from Marian. She married Arthur Fuehrer and had three children who are now grown. She resides in Drums Pa.

Jill Kemmerle Grover

Jill is a 1996 graduate of Marian. She participated and lettered in basketball, softball and track during her high school career. She was the starting point guard as a freshman for the Fillies. She led the Fillies to numerous appearances in Schuylkill League, District 11 and State Playoff games in her four years. She was an exceptional defensive player, tallying many of her points off her defensive play and steals. She scored her 1,000th point on Dec. 15, 1995 and finished her career with a total of 1,205 points. She also lead her team in assists and steals. Her athletic ability and talent was recognized as the Knights of Columbus Most Valuable Player, nominated All State, and Blue Ridge 13 Player of the Week. During her High School career she was also very active in her Anthracite Action AAU team. Jill played point guard and shooting guard while traveling all over the East Coast and eventually ending up at the AAU national championships in Shreveport, Louisiana and finishing as the 12th team in the country. Jill also played softball at Marian. She was the shortstop for two years and was the team’s leader in RBIs and home runs. Jill attended DeSales University. In 2014 she helped create and organize a women’s Basketball League in Jim Thorpe which still continues today. Jill is married to Jan Grover and is very active in her community volunteering as a youth basketball and softball coach. She is an assistant basketball coach for the AAU Coal Region basketball team. Jill has two daughters Jaclyn and Piper and two step children Tyler and Casey. She and her family reside in Hudsondale, Pa.

Joe Horvat

A 1997 graduate of Marian, Joe Horvat played a prominent role in Marian boys’ basketball history, leading the Colts to an overall record of 90-21 through four years, during which time he became the school’s all-time leading scorer, tallying 1,638 points, a record that stands 21 years later.As a freshman in 1993-94, he scored 100 points, he followed that up with 523 points in 1994-95, 461 more in 1995-96, his 1,000th-point season, and then recorded 554 points in 1996-97.During that time, the Colts of Dave McAndrew were a force to be reckoned with in Schuylkill League division play, finishing 11-1 in Joe’s freshman, sophomore and senior seasons, and 12-0 when he was a junior.In his freshman campaign, Marian went 25-7 and were the Eastern semifinalists, bowing to Scotland, 68-65. In 1994-95 when Joe was a sophomore, the Colts won the SL Division III title, before bowing 54-50 to Pottsville in the league title game. They went on to win Marian’s first District 11 title, defeating Mahanoy Area 65-57, before bowing out of the PIAA tourney to New Hope-Solebury, finishing up at 22-7. Joe tallied his 1,000th career point as a junior on Feb. 6, 1996. That year, the Colts went 20-2, including the unblemished division record, winning their third consecutive SL Division III title. They dropped their league playoff game to Schuylkill Haven, 59-57. His ‘96-97 campaign saw the Blue and Gold go 23-5, winning SL Division III crown but bowing to Schuylkill Haven in the league final. They advanced to the PIAA tourney as the third place entry, eventually dropping a tilt to Girard College. At Marian, Joe received two Athletic Association medals and the Senior Achievement Award. Joe ranks second in field goals in a career with 606 (behind Brad Shanfelt’s 623), and finished second in most free throws made in a season, 158 in 1994-95. His career total of 424 free throws made ranks him No. 1 in that category. A son of Anita Horvat ofLansford the late Frank Horvat, Joe is married tothe former Val Kondertavage. The couple has two daughters, Taylor and Isabella. The family resides in Lansford, where Joe is a former mayor of the town.

Scott Holloman

Scott is a 1998 graduate of Marian High School. He participated in three sports including football, basketball and track and field. He lettered in all three sports during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. The Colts played in the District 11 Class A final football game in Scott’s junior and senior seasons (1996 & 1997). At the time of graduation Scott held Marian’s football records for receptions in a game (9), season receptions (53) and career receptions (107), as well as holding Marian’s reception records for yards in a game (185), yards in a season (863), and yards in a career (1,817). Scott was ranked in the top ten receivers by The Standard Speaker at the beginning of his junior season in 1996. Scott was also a standout at the defensive back position earning All State ranking at this position in his senior season. Scott and Brent ‘Chuck’ Andrew were known as Chuck and Catch. They were touted in the Morning Call Newspaper as the best pass-catch combination in the area and possibly the State in August of 1997 of their senior season. They attributed their fusion to hard work, friendship and their unique ability to trust each other and know what the other is thinking. Scott was also a standout in basketball. He averaged 12.9 points per game in his senior season. The Colts basketball team Scott played on went to the State playoffs 2 out of the 3 years that Holloman was on the team including a trip to the Eastern finals. In track and field, Scott won the District 11 Class AA high jump as a junior (1997) breaking the school record with his 6-3 in jump. In his senior season he made a new school record of 6-4. During his senior track & field season 1998, he finished second in the 400 meter dash at the District 11 Class track meet. Scott’s 400 relay team set a school record during his senior season with a time of 45 seconds. Scott continued his education at Bloomsburg University before joining his brother Paul in the family roofing business. Scott is married to Jennifer Holloman and they have three children, Frank, Nathan and Aubrey. They reside in Harleysville, Pa.

Greg Izzo

Greg is a 1988 graduate from Marian High School. As a student, Greg played 4 years on the football team and participated in Track and Field.During his sophomore and junior seasons, Greg was the backup tailback to Hall of Fame running back, Bob Agosti. He was on the 1986 football team that went undefeated and went on to win the Eastern Conference Championship. Greg started at tailback his senior year and went on to rush for 1,384 yards and 20 touchdowns. Greg had a 53 yard touchdown pass and the game winning touchdown run in the Schuylkill North-South All Star game. Greg was a senior Co-Captain for a team that went on to play in the District 11 championship game. He was a Big 33 nominee, First Team All-Area and twice the Morning Call player of the week.In track Greg competed in the District 11 Championships in the 110 m high hurdles and the 4X100 relay. Greg went on to play football for two years at Widener University. He graduated from Widener University as a Civil Engineer. He also participated in competitive cycling and mountain bike racing. Greg is married to Barbara and they have two children, Aria and Vittorio. They reside in Bothell, Washington

Jim McHugh

Jim is a 1982 graduate of Marian High School. Jim is a three-year letter winner in Football. He finished his football career at Marian with a combine 44-5 win/loss record (32-5 varsity,12-0 JV). In his sophomore season 1979, he contributed on Special Teams and situational play at Defensive End and helped the Colts to a 9-2 season. Marian outscored their opponents 288-100 with three shutouts. In his junior year, Jim was the starting left Tackle on offense and played a major role on the Defensive side of the ball at interior lineman to help the Colts to a 12-1 record and an Eastern Conference Class B Championship. The first for Marian. In that season the Colts outscored their opponents 403-157 and had two 1,000 yard rushers which Jim helped break through the line. Marian finished the year Ranked as 4th best team in the Anthracite League by the Reading Eagle and one of the top 30 teams in the entire state of Pennsylvania by The Philadelphia Inquirer. In his senior year, Jim started at tackle on offense and anchored the defensive line at tackle. The Colts would outscore their opponents 359-165. Jim led the team in tackles with 102, with 49 of those tackles being solo. He received numerous Weekly Defensive Player of the Week Awards during his Senior year. In week 9 against Hazleton the Colts came from behind and won the game in the last 24 seconds. Jim was named Defensive Player of the Week for his defensive play (which included 5 quarterback sacks). The Colts made it to the Eastern Conference Championship game but this time losing to Scranton Prep 10-8. The finished the season with a 11-2 record and finished ranked 5th in the Anthracite League by the Reading Eagle and 5th in the Northeast by WNEP. Jim received many post season recognitions including 3rd Team All State Defensive Lineman, 1st Team All Anthracite Defense, 1st Team All Reading Defense, 1st Team All Harrisburg Defense, 1st Team All Schuylkill County Defense and Offense. Jim started in the Schuylkill/Berks All-Star game at Nose Guard.Jim had many scholarship offers to play football at the college level. He accepted a full scholarship to James Madison University playingnose guard and special teams. Jim was one of the founding members who started the Marian Lil’ Colts program. He ran the program from 2007-2014. He was a volunteer coach for the Colts varsity program in 2015 and 2016. He became a full time varsity coach in 2017 and continues this today. Jim is married to Sherry and they have three children, Riley, Amanda and Shannon who attended Marian as well. They reside in Jim Thorpe, Pa.

Pat Morgans, Jr.

Pat is a 1986 graduate of Marian High School.He participated in football, basketball and track. Pat was a 3 year letter winner in football. In his junior year he had 11 receptions for 214 yards He averaged 19.5 yards per catch and had 1 TD. He also had 4 interceptions on defense. He was named to the Schuylkill County Coaches All Star 2nd team defensive back. In his Senior year Pat had 31 receptions for 522 yards He averaged 16.8 yards per catch. He had eight touchdowns, 1 on defense. Pat had three interceptions (1 returned for a TD) and a fumble recovery.He was second on the team in scoring with 36 points. He was 6th in scoring in the Times News Area.Pat was names to the 1st team DB by the Standard Speaker. He was 1st Team All Area Team by the Reading Eagle Newspaper. He made the Schuylkill County All-Star team for WR and DB. He was names as Honorable Mention as a WR for the State. The 1986 Colts won the District 11 Championship that year. Pat was also a member of the special teams and the hands team. Pat was a two year letter winner in Basketball. In his junior year he had 133 points and averaged 5.8 points per game. This was the 4th highest on the team. During his Senior year he scored 311 points and averaged 12 points per game. He was the second leading scorer. Pat was the captain of his Freshman team, JV team his sophomore year and Senior year. The Colts placed second in District 11 during Pat’s senior year.He lettered in track one year.Pat graduated 4th in his class and attended Bucknell University on a full football scholarship.He has served as an assistant football coach at Marian for 10 seasons. And has been the head coach for two years. Pat has five children, Justin, Ryan, Emma, Sara and Abby and resides in Hometown.

Joe Regalis

Joe is a 1967 graduate of Marian High School. While at Marian he participated in track and field and football for all four years, lettering in both. Joe made his mark in track and field throwing the discus, a skill which reached its zenith at the 1967 PCIAA track and field meet at Reading Central Catholic, for a throw of 149 feet 11 inches, which broke the previous record by 14 feet 7 inches. This record lasted for over 20 years and still qualifies for states and is the highmark at Marian. In football, Joe played offensive/defensive line, playing well enough for a Division I full scholarship to the University of South Carolina. Joe would excel on the gridiron for the Gamecocks. He was a second team offensive tackle on the Gamecocks 1969 ACC championship team. That team played in the Peach Bowl. Joe was first team defensive tackle during his final two seasons at South Carolina. Joe was invited to the New York Jets free agent camp in 1972 and was offered an opportunity to play for their Bridgeport Jets team. After football Joe played rugby. He played this sport for more than 13 years for teams in South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Louisiana. Joe is married to Patricia A O’Malley. He is retired and residing in Tamaqua.

Wayne Stehle

Wayne is a 1983 graduate of Marian High School. While at Marian, Wayne participated in basketball and track. Wayne will be remembered by Marian football fans as a bruising fullback and linebacker who played prominently in the Colts going 19-3-1 in his junior and senior campaigns. Counting his sophomore season when in an underclassman role he saw only limited action. The varsity teams he played on had a stunning record of 31-4-1 with an Eastern Conference title and runner up finish. As a junior, he was an integral part of the Colts march to the Eastern Conference Class B championship game, where they dropped a 10-8 decision to Scranton Prep. That year, the Colts started out 2-0 before bowing to Pottsville, but Stehle and his teammates proceeded to rack up eight straight wins, finishing the regular season10-1. They defeated Wiles-Barre Meyers in the EC semifinal before losing the title game. As a sophomore, Stehle was a member of the Colt’s first ever championship squad that won the EC title. In his junior year Wayne rushed 191 times for 602 yards, 3.1 yards per carry, tallying nine touchdowns. In his senior year, the Colts went 8-1-1, losing to Pottsville 14-13 and sharing an 8-8 tie with Panther Valley. That team was most notably known for its outstanding defense. With Wayne holding down one of the linebacker posts, the Colts yielded a mere 48 points to their 10 opponents, the D squad holding the Marian record for the least amount of points allowed in a 10 game season., bettering the 1976 Colts who went 9-1 and allowed just 53 points. As a senior running back, Wayne rushed 155 times for 742 yards, 4.78 yards per carry, hitting pay dirt four times. Overall, in his two full seasons of varsity play, he amassed 346 carries for 1,344 yards, 3.9 yards per carry, tallying 13 touchdowns. For his offensive and defensive prowess, Wayne received numerous postseason honors, having been named to many area All Star teams. After receiving over 30 invitations to colleges all around the country, he accepted a Full scholarship to the University of Connecticut. Wayne has coached pee wee football, girls basketball, been a ski instructor and a whitewater river guide. He has two grown children, Taylor and Torin and resides in Walnutport.
