Schuylkill Haven routs Panther Valley

No points are awarded for effort in any sport.

But If they were, the final score would have been closer than Schuylkill Haven’s 67-7 victory over Panther Valley on Friday night.

The Hurricanes rolled up nearly 500 yards in offense, all coming on the ground. Junior Kobe Brish, on his second carry, bolted down the right sideline for a 33-yard TD run to open the scoring.

After Panther QB, Ethan Reis was sacked in the end zone for a safety, Brish blasted through the middle from his own 44-yard line for his second TD and the Hurricanes never looked back

But neither did the Panthers look back at the scoreboard, which saw Haven punch up 32 first quarter points and three more TDs in the second period to lead 53-0 at the half.

“We were outgunned and outmanned,” said Panther coach Scott Price. “But the effort on every play was there all night.”

The second half brought more of the same as the Hurricanes manhandled the Panther defense to chew up first down yardage almost at will.

“We played well up front,” said Haven coach Mike Farr. “We executed on defense, but I wasn’t happy how we played with no emotion on defense.”

The Panthers (2-7) were able to make some plays, but were unable to sustain drives. They managed 11 first downs in the game, mostly on tough inside running by Elias Tavares. Late in the second half, sophomore Louis Clauser entered the game for PV and slashed through the Hurricane defense on several nice runs. His 24 yard scamper put the Panthers on the board with under eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

“We’re young this year, but we have a great core coming back next season, said Price. “All our skill position players are back and each one has done very well for us this year.”

FINALE ... Panther Valley finishes its season next Friday at Minersville.

FIELD YIELD ... The Panthers were plagued by poor field position all night, evidenced by surrendering two safeties in the first quarter.

WHO CARRIED THE BALL? ... With Haven’s jerseys’ numbers a light gold on white and the Panthers’ numbers gold outlines on black, identifying the ball carriers was so difficult that at timesthe announcer needed to shout down to the Haven fans who sat below the press box for help with identification.
