Bombers edge Northwestern in field hockey

Palmerton’s field hockey team celebrated Senior Night in style Tuesday evening against Northwestern.

The two teams had played to a tie in their only other meeting this season, and the same story seemed to be brewing for most of last night’s contest. But a goal late in the second half by Megan Serfass allowed the Blue Bombers to pull out a 3-2 Colonial League victory.

“It was on our field on turf, which we play so much better on,” Palmerton coach Patrick Frank said. “These girls have been playing so hard every game ... They needed this win and they knew it. Senior night had them extra fired up. I didn’t think they were going to go home with a loss tonight.”

Senior Sayler Burke put Palmerton on the board first with a goal just over four minutes into the game. Northwestern was able to tie it up on a MacKenzie Mosebach goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.

The game went back-and-forth and began to intensify once the second half began. Burke shot wide-left on a solid scoring chance for Palmerton and moments later, Northwestern received a corner but couldn’t convert it.

Emma Christman eventually added the Blue Bombers second goal, but their 2-1 lead soon vanished. In less than a minute, and with 20 minutes left in regulation, Northwestern’s Ally Lister came right back to tie the game.

The score remained 2-2 until Megan Serfass came through with the tiebreaking goal with 6:19 left to play. The Tigers were unable to tally the rest of the way and fell to 8-8-1 on the season.

Northwestern coach Lissa Oplosky pointed out how Northwestern can work on capitalizing better on its opportunities.

“We definitely had good spurts of offense,” Oplosky said. “We didn’t necessarily take advantage of all of our opportunities, so I think that’s what it ultimately came down to.

“Just taking advantage of our opportunities will be something that we work on. We had enough corners and shots ... It was a back-and-forth game, so it just goes to show there were two really good teams out there.”

Not only were the Palmerton senior field hockey players honored before the contest, but Northwestern’s seniors were also recognized.

“It’s sad how quick time flies by, and I told everybody that next year some of them are going to be standing here, and I just hope they appreciate the time they’ve had at high school because getting into the real world is a different story,” Frank said.

“I’m sad to see them go. Honestly, we have such a good group of girls out here. They all work together nice.”

UP NEXT ... Northwestern wraps up the 2018 regular season Thursday at Catasauqua. Palmerton still has two games to go, one at home against Saucon Valley and the other on the road at Northern Lehigh.

WINNER, WINNER

… Not only did Palmerton win Tuesday’s varsity matchup, the Blue Bombers also took the win in the JV match by an identical 3-2 score.

OFF THE POST … MacKenzie Mosebush’s goal for Northwestern ricocheted right to her for the score when the ball bounced off the top of the post.
