Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company will host an open house Saturday as a part of a national effort to prevent fires and promote public safety.
The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which begins on Oct. 7 and goes through Oct. 13, is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” According to the National Fire Protection Association, this year’s lessons focus on steps that could possibly reduce the likelihood of a fire and how to escape in case one does occur.
The Albrightsville Fire Co.’s open house begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. The day will feature demonstrations of the company’s Safety Trailer. Firefighters will also teach participants how to exit a burning building. There will be refreshments, giveaways and an opportunity to meet the company’s volunteer firefighters.
In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge declared Fire Prevention Week a national observance. It’s commemorated during the week of Oct. 9 to memorialize the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed around 300 people and caused approximately $200 million in damages.
