Local Sports Roundup: Results from Sept. 25
The Tamaqua boys soccer team earned another one-goal victory in action on Tuesday.
The Blue Raiders defeated Lehighton for their fourth one-goal win.
In other action, Northwestern gained wins in three sports — boys and girls soccer, and volleyball.
BOYS SOCCER
Tamaqua-Lehighton
Tamaqua scored a pair of second-half goals to edge Lehighton, 2-1, in a Schuylkill League game.
Jacob Rudy and Nathaniel Noftz both scored for the Raiders (7-1; 5-1).
Drew Lorenz scored for the Indians (3-7; 1-7) with 7:31 remaining in the game, but they weren’t able to get the game-tying tally.
Tamaqua finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots and an 11-5 edge in corners.
Luke Verta made four saves in goal for Tamaqua. Lehighton’s Zach Andrews made seven saves.
Northwestern-Palmerton
Northwestern routed Palmerton, 5-0, in a Colonial League game.
Jeff Garcia had a hat trick to lead the Tigers (9-1-1; 8-0). Caleb Danner and Luke Bryan each added single goals.
The loss drops Palmerton to 2-5 in the league and 3-6 overall.
Pleasant Valley-Emmaus
Emmaus received goals from four different players to gain a 4-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.
The Bears (9-2; 8-2) trailed by only a goal at halftime, but couldn’t muster any offense.
Creyn Muthard, Eric Johnson, Justin Llado, and Callen Reid all scored for the winners, who had 10 shots on goal to PV’s one.
Emmaus (7-3-1; 6-2-1) also held a 10-3 advantage in corners.
GIRLS SOCCER
Northwestern-Palmerton
Northwestern cruised to a 6-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.
Maggie Motolese scored four times to lead Northwestern. Sara Hathaway and Hallie Bleam also found the back of the net.
Northwestern is now 6-1 in the CL and 10-1 overall. Palmerton drops to 2-5 in the league and 2-6 overall.
Pottsville-Jim Thorpe
Pottsville blanked Jim Thorpe, 6-0 in Schuylkill League action.
Ava Goodman and Cora Alvarez both scored a pair of goals for the Crimson Tide (8-3; 7-1). Samantha Day and Hannah Leskin also scored.
The loss drops Jim Thorpe to 2-6 in league play and 4-6 overall.
No. Lehigh-Wilson
Northern Lehigh picked up its first victory of the season, rolling to a 4-0 Colonial League decision over Wilson.
Kate Yesik scored twice for the Bulldogs (1-10; 1-9) while Shaina Mazzocca and Lexi Meckes each scored once.
The Bulldogs dominated the contest, finishing with a 19-1 advantage in shots.
VOLLEYBALL
Jim Thorpe-Lehighton
Jim Thorpe posted a 25-10, 25-16, 25-13 Schuylkill League sweep of Lehighton.
Brandy Montemuro paved the way for Thorpe with 17 digs, 15 kills and 11 assists. Abbey McGinley supplied 22 digs, while Kelsey Carroll had 21 assists and nine kills.
Sydney Vincent had six digs, four kills and one ace for the Indians. Alexis Soloman added three kills.
Jim Thorpe improves to 6-2 in Schuylkill League play and 8-2 overall. Lehighton falls to 2-6 in the league and 5-6 overall.
Pleasant Vy.-Whitehall
Pleasant Valley’s rally came up just short as it dropped a 25-21, 25-21, 14-25, 21-25, 15-6 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference decision to Whitehall.
Desi Powell was strong in defeat as she had 20 kills, 13 digs and three blocks for the Bears. Cameron Caffrey (29 assists, 13 digs, three kills, two blocks); Madi Rosenberg (12 blocks, four kills); Summer Karaman (five kills, three digs); Ari Thourot (eight assists); Desi Beade (11 digs); and Ari Weaver (13 digs, six kills, three blocks) also played well.
Pleasant Valley is now 6-2 in EPC play. Whitehall is 4-6.
Tamaqua-Lourdes
Tamaqua outlasted Lourdes 26-24, 25-18, 12-25, 21-215, 15-9 in a Schuylkill League match.
Emily Amershek had a big night at the net for the Raiders with 31 kills. She also added five digs and five aces. Also contributing to the victory were Ella McLaughlin (45 digs); Brynn Gigli (18 assists, eight aces); and Morgan Houser (five kills).
The victory improves Tamaqua’s record to 2-6 in the league and 3-7 overall.
U. Dauphin-Weatherly
Weatherly dropped a 25-22, 25-14, 20-25, 25-17 Schuylkill League decision to Upper Dauphin.
Emily Zoscin had 12 kills and five aces to pace the Wreckers (1-8).
DeAnna Strouse contributed 23 assists, while Nikki Polivka added five kills and four blocks.
No.-Dame-Palmerton
Notre Dame defeated Palmerton, 3-0, in a Colonial League match.
Palmerton falls to 2-5 in the CL and 2-8 overall. Notre Dame improves to 5-1 in the league and 7-2 overall.
