A Lehigh County couple is in custody after attempting to break into their former apartment in Slatington.

Alex Haley, 36, no address given, faces charges on one count each of criminal trespass and resisting arrest or other law enforcement, while Ashley Lederach, 26, no address given, faces one count of criminal trespass.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer William Brobst of the Slatington Borough Police Department:

At 10:56 p.m. Sept. 16, Brobst and officer Kevin Torres were dispatched to 251 Main St., Apt. 2, for the report of a burglary in progress.

Brobst, Torres and officer Michael Concilio arrived on scene and set up a perimeter around the building. Brobst and Torres saw a No trespassing order from the Lehigh County District Court on the front door of the residence.

Brobst was aware that police had previously received multiple calls to the address for trespassing by the former tenants, Haley and Lederach, who were evicted by the owner of the property.

Brobst knocked on the door of the residence. The door was locked and no one answered.

A neighbor told police she saw a man and a woman exit a second-story window on the east side of the building.

Brobst, Torres and Concilio ran to the east side and saw a man and woman running down the steps of a neighboring apartment building at 249 Main St. They ordered both parties to the ground.

Torres attempted to place Haley into handcuffs, but he began twisting his body and pulling his arms away.

Brobst tried to help place Haley into handcuffs, however Haley continued to roll his body and pull his arms away from officers.

Brobst struck Haley in the head as Torres continued to struggle with him. Brobst was able to take control of Haley’s right arm and place it behind his back, allowing Torres to place Haley into handcuffs.

Both were taken to police headquarters.

Lederach admitted that she and Haley, her boyfriend, had been evicted from the residence and went through a second-story window of the building because the locks on the front door had been changed.

Brobst and Torres transported Haley and Lederach to the Lehigh County Central Booking Center for processing.

Haley remains incarcerated in Lehigh County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail, while Lederach is in lieu of $10,000 bail, and both have a bail release condition to stay away from 251 Main St.

Both Haley and Lederach are scheduled to appear for their preliminary hearings at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the office of District Judge Wayne Maura.
