Representatives from Carbon Career & Technical Institute are going to court to seek approval to elevate the position of school resource officer to a school police officer.

The approval would give Frank DeMatto, the current school resource officer the official title of school police officer.

Along with the new title, DeMatto would be granted all the same rights as every other police officer.

Director David Reinbold said the primary focus for DeMatto would be attendance and intervention in situations that might warrant it.

DeMatto was listed on the meeting agenda to discuss ALICE training, but it was determined in executive session that some of the discussion was of a confidential nature and the agenda item was deferred.

ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate.

According to its website www.alicetraining.com, it is “Number 1 Active Shooter Civilian Response Training for all Organizations.”

In other business, David Reinbold congratulated his team on an outstanding start to the 2018-19 school year. “(There are) 393 enrolled and when I checked today’s attendance, it was 97 percent,” Reinbold reported. He also stated that there is an increasing trend in the number of students who attend CCTI half-time who wish to move to full-time attendance.

Carbon Career & Technical Institute Principal Brent Borzak is seeking an increase in parental participation for next Wednesday’s Senior Information Night. The school will be open to provide information on application, financial aid and other important aspects of preparation for college. This year the school is inviting parents of students in their Junior year to attend in order to assist with early college planning.
