Local author to discuss latest book at Hawk Mountain

Cindy Ross will present her seventh book, “The World is our Classroom,” and host a book signing at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary from 4 to 5 p.m. Sept. 29. Ross will share how she utilized Hawk Mountain Sanctuary — its biologists, programs and natural opportunities — and the natural world surrounding her rural home to educate her children.

Her program will include a reading from the book about specific experiences at the sanctuary. The program will be followed by a book signing with the author, and books will be available for purchase.

“The World is our Classroom” features how one family used the natural world and national travel to shape an extraordinary education. Ross is passionate about spreading the word on the importance of using the natural world in teaching children and connecting them to the outdoors.

She shares her expertise gleaned from 24 years of mothering as a writer, outdoor adventurer, home-school educator and presentation and workshop facilitator.

Ross has written about raising children alternatively, via outdoor adventures and travel, for a variety of publications, including the Los Angeles Times, the Toronto Star and Backpacker magazine.

She has lectured on the virtues of this educational approach and its effects on children’s creative minds and their thirst for learning for 25 years. Her children have fledged the nest, but Cindy and her husband still live in their self-built home in New Ringgold.
