Victim says she was abused by man fatally shot by police

LANCASTER (AP) — The woman police said was being held at gunpoint by a man who was then shot and killed by a Pennsylvania police officer alleged in seeking a protection from abuse order that he had abused her for several years.

The 27-year-old woman said in the January 2015 protection order that 29-year-old Ricardo Avenia punched and choked her for years. LNP newspaper reports that the order was discontinued because the woman later failed to appear in court.

Authorities said a Lancaster officer shot and killed Avenia through a window after responding to a 911 call Sunday reporting that children were screaming that their father was going to kill their mother.

District Attorney Craig Stedman is reviewing the shooting to determine whether the officer was justified in using lethal force.
