A look back: Sept. 15, 1962

A greased pig contest, part of Palmerton’s Golden Jubilee celebration, attracted 1,000 spectators yesterday afternoon who saw 70 youngsters scramble after five greased pigs.

Thomas Wertman, Philip Steigerwalt and Ruth Graver, all of Palmerton, and William Graver of Big Creek were the winners. Allan Kistler of Palmerton took a cash prize instead of a live 50-pound pig.

Festivities continue this week with a jubilee parade, followed by an old-fashioned ox roast in the high school stadium. A 500-pound Black Angus steer was being roasted early this morning by Karl Reichstadter, Lehighton R. 3 butcher, with the feasting expected to begin around noon.
