Lehighton Band to present final concert of summer
The Lehighton Band, which has been providing quality musical entertainment through concerts and other events for 153 years, is planning its second summer concert of the year.
The concert will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday in the borough’s Upper Park amphitheater. The selection of songs varies from popular to classical to marches.
The band will start the concert with the playing of the national anthem, followed by John Phillips Sousa’s “The Thunderer March.”
The overture for the evening is a contemporary piece of music by David Shafer titled “Whitewater Festival.”
The band continues the concert with a song titled “The Seventies,” which uses about 18 snippets from popular ’70s music to make up one piece of music. This song is a preview for the band’s 2019 spring concert, whose theme is tentatively set to be a “Trip Through the Decades.”
The concert will continue with the band’s first soloist for the evening, Mike Reph, who will perform Harold Walters’ arrangement of the familiar song “Come Back to Sorrento.” Reph has been playing trumpet with the Lehighton Band for many years, and he also performs with the Palmerton Band.
“Torch of Liberty,” a march by Karl King, will be the band’s next selection.
The band’s next selection, titled “The Greatest Showman,” includes songs from the movie, including “The Greatest Show,” “A Million Dreams,” “Never Enough,” “This is Me” and “From Now On.”
“Interlude for Band,” by Walter Alan Finlayson, is a relaxing piece of concert music that will be the transition to “Cambridge Hill” by Mark Taylor, which is a spirited piece of concert band music.
The band will continue with “Barry Manilow on Tour,” which includes “Jump Shout Boogie,” “Even Now,” “Daybreak,” “Ready to Take a Chance Again” and “Copacabana.”
“One for the Road,” by John Tatgenhorst, which is a “strut” style song, will be the band’s next selection.
The concert will wrap up with Karl King’s “The Trombone King” march.
The band is under the direction of Bradley R. Cressley, with Barry Gangwer acting as emcee for the program.
This concert is the final of three free concerts given in the Lehighton Park by the Lehighton Band.
The band’s Christmas and spring concerts will be announced soon.
