Towamensing Twp. awards contracts for materials, fuel
Towamensing Township’s board of supervisors awarded contracts for materials, heating oil and diesel fuel at Thursday’s meeting.
The township opened bids from Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction for road materials and PAPCO for oil and fuel during July’s meeting, though supervisor Guy Seifert motioned to table the award in order to allow the township engineer and solicitor, along with Chairwoman Penny Kleintop, to review the information first.
In addition to Lehigh Asphalt’s offers, the township received further material bids from Hanson Aggregates and H & K Group. PAPCO was the only company to place a bid for oil and fuel.
After engineer Greg Haas announced rates and total costs for PA-2A modified stone, AASHTO #1 stone, PennDOT Type AS3 Anti-Skid and 19 mm Superpave Binder Course, Seifert made the motion to award the bids.
“I make a motion that we go with the lowest responsible bidder, which would Lehigh Asphalt for the AASHTO #1, and Hanson Aggregates for the PA-2A, PennDOT Type AS3, and the Superpave 19 mm, and PAPCO for both the low-sulfur diesel and the heating oil, conditional upon the bids being reviewed by counsel,” Seifert said.
Lehigh Asphalt bid $18.20 per ton for 300 tons of AASHTO #1 stone for a total of $5,460. Hanson Aggregates bid $15.90 per ton for 1,000 tons of PA-2A modified stone for a total of $15,900, $16.65 per ton for 600 tons of PennDOT Type AS3 Anti-Skid for a total of $9,990 and $57.45 per ton of 19 mm Superpave Binder Course for a total of $57,450. PAPCO bid $2.7560 per gallon for 15,000 gallons of low-sulfur diesel fuel for a total of $41,339.25 and $2.7775 per gallon for 2,000 gallons of No. 2 heating oil for a total of $5,555.

Towamensing Volunteer Fire Company President Eric George announced that there have been reports of a scam involving requests for donations to the department.
“People from Kunkletown, Towamensing and Lehighton are receiving membership drive paperwork to donate to the volunteer fire company, but you’re sending it to Kansas,” George said.
“Unless it comes with the garbage bills and is addressed from 120 Stable Road in Lehighton or 105 Firehouse Road in Palmerton, it is not from the fire company. Those would be the only two addresses we would use to take part in memberships or donations.”
George said that he has not received word from anyone in Towamensing who received one of the fraudulent requests, though he advises residents to be on the lookout for anything suspicious.
Vice Chairman Thomas Newman advised that the township’s recycling center will not be taking in glass or paper products until next week due to construction.
