Lehighton’s National Night Out educates public through services

In many respects, Lehighton’s National Night Out 2018 was about mixing business with pleasure.

Held Tuesday in the borough’s upper park, the event offered visitors a chance to mingle with police, first responders and other community groups that were on hand.

By the end of the night, the smell of buttery popcorn wafted through the air while the movie “Zootopia” was shown for free in the park at dusk courtesy of the Lehighton Downtown Initiative.

The event was a combined effort between the Lehighton Police Department and LDI, and marked the fourth straight year the borough has hosted the event.

Mahoning and Franklin Township police departments also agreed to partner with the borough police department to help anchor the event.

Borough police Detective Matt Arner said he was pleased with the event despite the fact attendance was likely down in part to the uncertainty of the weather.

“It’s a beautiful night here in Lehighton for this,” Arner said. “There are people at all different tables, crafts, services.”

Count Kaysha Mazur among those who were pleased after she had her picture drawn at the Caricatures by Gene table.

Kaysha, of Lehighton, appeared mesmerized by how spot-on the sketch drawn by artist Gene Mater was of her.

“I really like it, and I would like to learn how to draw like this,” said Kaysha, 9.

Arner said the purpose of the event was for the community to learn more about the services that are offered.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Carbon County Rocks, the Lehighton Fire Department, Lehighton Ambulance, the Lehighton Outdoor Center, the Lehighton Memorial Library, PathStone Head Start, Rep. Doyle Heffley’s office, and Pennsylvania State Parole were also in attendance.

There was also food from KCL’s Great Food on the Go, and an ice cream bus.

Arner noted that the borough police department initially held National Night Out in 2008 and 2009, and was the first in the county to do so.

If the person in the drawing looks like Kaysha Mazur, that’s because it is. The 9-year-old from Lehighton was one of many to stop by the Caricatures by Gene table. In this photo, Kaysha proudly displays her picture along with Gene Mater, who sketched it.
