Soap box derby world champion honored

Schuylkill County has a world champion, and he’s only 13 years old.

Soap Box Derby racer Bradeyn Ditzler, of Port Carbon, triumphed in the Masters Division at the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, last month.

On Wednesday, the Schuylkill County Supervisors recognized Ditzler with a proclamation.

“Two great events happened this year, the Eagles won the championship, and a soap box derby world champion was crowned. Thank you for bringing that gold home to Pottsville and Schuylkill County,” said Commissioner Gary J. Hess.

Ditzler, 13, bested racers from across the country and internationally.

For his victory, Ditzler earned a $3,000 scholarship and a trophy that rivals him in height. He also gets to keep a champion’s ring until next year’s event.

Following the meeting where the commissioners gave their proclamation, they invited Ditzler to sign his name in the clock tower of the Schuylkill County Courthouse.

“You really represented this area well, and you don’t know how proud we are of you,” said Commissioner George F. Halcovage Jr.
