Two people were killed separate crashes over the weekend in Schuylkill County.
State police at Schuylkill Haven said the first crash occurred about 12:15 p.m. on Friday along Route 183 in Wayne Township. Troopers said Howard C. Russell, 94, of Auburn, was driving a 2005 Buick Lacrosse northbound when he veered into the southbound lane and struck a 2003 Jeep Wrangler operated by a man from Auburn, who police declined to identify. The Buick struck the Jeep in the front right. After impact the Buick spun in a clockwise direction and came to final rest in a parking lot at 744 Route 183. The Jeep came to rest at the point of impact.
Russell was taken to the Reading Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The other driver was also injured but troopers did not indicate where he received medical attention.
The second crash involved a motorcycle and occurred about 2:09 a.m. on Saturday along Route 443 (Deturksville Road), in Washington Township. Derek S. Soper, 23, of Pine Grove, was operating a 2015 Yamaha R5 eastbound and negotiating a left curve and was traveling too fast for conditions skidding off the road about 100 feet striking small shrubbery, a traffic sign and a small rock wall. Soper came to rest at this point but the bike continued another 45 feet before coming to rest.
Soper was taken by medical helicopter to the Hershey Medical Center where he later died of his injuries. Soper was wearing a full helmet and other protective clothing, troopers said.
The investigation into the crash is continuing.
